Yasin Arafat?s superb bowling performance, and a timely unbeaten century from Faisal Hossain, propelled the Chittagong Division to a comprehensive 8-wicket victory over the Barisal Division, in their first-class match during the ongoing National Cricket League, played from December 1 to 4 at the MA Aziz Stadium in Chittagong.
The home team won the toss and chose to field first, with the ruthless Yasin Arafat (23.4-11-25-5) leading the attack, while Rezaul Karim (27-10-54-2) followed. Only three of Barisal?s batsmen succeeded in moving beyond single digits, and even then Arafat kept a check on them. Fazle Mahmud (19) was dismissed by Arafat before he could capitalise on his start, top-scorer Salman Hossain (98) was eventually snuffed out by Arafat 2 runs short of a century, while Mohammad Sajib (49*) was the only one who managed to get away.
A total of five batsmen were dismissed on duck, and three of these ? Kamrul Islam Rabbi, skipper Monir Hossain, and Towhidul Islam ? comprised the tail, which Arafat nipped out with a hat-trick in the 105th over. Barisal eventually succumbed, all out, at a first innings total of 204.
Kamrul Islam Rabbi (21.4-1-65-5) and Monir Hossain (28-7-45-4) attempted to apply the same checks Chittagong had restricted Barisal with, but solid performances from centurion and Player of the Match Faisal Hossain (123*), and Nazimuddin (72) enabled Chittagong to post a first innings total of 296, which Barisal found hard to beat.
Noor Hossain (14-4-29-5) and Yasin Arafat (25-5-62-3) teamed up to keep Barisal down to a low score, in order to secure their side a low total to chase. Top-order batsmen Reazur Rahman (27), Nasiruddin Faruque (24), and Fazle Mahmud (50) were the only ones who put up a fight ? the rest of the batting order failed to pass the 20-run mark, and within 71 overs, the team was all out at 163, setting Chittagong an easy 72-run target to chase.
Nasiruddin Faruque?s (8-0-24-2) attempts to defend his team?s total were valiant, but desperate. While he managed to dismiss openers Irfan Sukkur (36) and skipper Nafees Iqbal (12), it was too late by then, and Yasir Ali (11*) and Nazimuddin (13*) proceeded to lead their team to an easy victory, with 8 wickets remaining.
