Apple: developers now have until June 1 to sandbox apps for the Mac App Store
Back in the fall, Apple gave developers an ultimatum: sandbox your applications, or see yourself out of the Mac App Store and sell your apps elsewhere. Originally, devs had until March 1st to make the change, which limits the resources apps can access, thereby making a malware infection less likely. Still, sandboxing inherently means less control for developers: the fewer resources an app can use, the less it can actually do. Well, code monkeys, you've now got a few more months to decide which camp you'd rather be in: Apple has extended that deadline to June 1st. As MacRumors notes, the move comes amid mounting concerns from developers, who have been complaining of bugs and other issues associated with the sandboxing process. In a statement on its developer site, Apple gave a pithier explanation, saying it wants to give devs more time to make use of new sandboxing entitlements available in OS X 10.7.3, along with new APIs in Xcode 4.3.

At work in Iraq with Anthony Shadid
Naseer Mehdawi, Anthony Shadid's closest Iraqi friend and journalism colleague, recalls their friendship and how together they told the story of Iraq.
Reporters are cantankerous, competitive and frequently catty. Yet Anthony Shadid's sad and untimely death has brought forth nothing but praise and admiration from every corner. An old friend reminded me yesterday of a conversation in 2006 in which I told her that "Shadid, hands down, is the best reporter working in Iraq." I suspect all of us who covered the war there said that at one time or another. Like all of us, of course, he had help, particularly from Naseer Mehdawi, the Iraqi colleague who worked with him on the stories that landed Anthony the 2004 Pulitzer.

He wrote the following to Naseer in his copy of Anthony's 2006 book on Iraq, "Night Draws Near": "There is no better friend in this world, no colleague more loyal, no man who I admire more. I remember the first time I met Anthony Shadid in February 2003. I had been working for The Washington Post in Baghdad with Rajiv Chandrasekaran and the photographer Michael Robinson Chavez. Anthony had joined Rajiv and me and Chavez. Rajiv introduced Anthony to me and told me that he was a great journalist. He had been working with another paper, but the Post hired him because he is the best. Then orders came from Phil Bennett, who was the Post?s assistant managing editor for foreign news at the time, that all the journalists of the Post should leave Iraq because the troops were gathering in the Gulf and the war would happen. But Anthony refused. He stayed and asked me if I would like to stay with him. I was very interested in journalism and looking at what might happen. Rajiv left with Chavez to wait in Kuwait. (They later returned after the war started.) It was only me and Anthony. Our driver was Karim Sadon. After that we were pretty much Anthony?s team, me and Karim. Everyone at the Post knew that we were Anthony?s guys.
I started my journey with Anthony looking for people expressing their feeling about what would happen. I had an instinct that the regime would collapse. I made up my mind to help him and support him. I took Anthony to Kadhamiya, a large Shiite neighborhood in Baghdad. All the people there hated Saddam because he was targeting them and killed many of their families during the uprising after the 1991 Gulf War. When I told Anthony about this, he was happy about the tip, and he started to get closer to me, to count on me. I had begun to think like Anthony, to know the kinds of stories he wanted, the people he wanted to meet. Anthony liked talking to people on the streets, the real people who were affected by Saddam and affected by the war. His confidence in me became stronger.
I remember that Saddam?s Information Ministry gave us an order to go to specific places. We refused. We went to forbidden places that no one dared to go except me and Anthony. At restaurants we?d talk about where to go next, all the places Saddam did not want us to see. We set out on daily trips with our brave driver, Karim, going to various parts of the country, meeting people, discussing issues, and making friends. We met workers at factories, farmers in the fields, government employees who were fed up with the restrictions of the regime, university students aspiring for an opportunity to be free and express their woes and dreams, clerics secluded inside their small mosques, and just simple, down-to-earth people. We listened to stories of women who had lost their husbands and sons in the many wars waged by the regime.

TAMPA | Major league baseball teams started coming to Florida for spring training almost a century ago, traveling by rail from the often still-frozen North to get in shape and play some exhibition games in the sun.
For baseball fans needing an early fix after a long winter, spring training is hard to beat. The weather is almost always sunny and warm (temperatures in the 70s and 80s), the ballparks are cozier than regular stadiums, beer and hot dogs are cheap(er) and everything ? parking, tailgating, finding your seats, standing in line for food ? is just more laid-back. Many of the seats are so close that fans can hear the on-field chatter. Players haven't become mired in slumps or losing streaks yet, so most of them don't mind stopping for autographs.
"It's very intimate compared to going to a big stadium," said Julie Baldwin, who lives in suburban Washington D.C. and has come down with her family to root for the Boston Red Sox in some spring games. "Your parking is right there. It's just easy, everything is so much on a smaller scale and not so daunting."
In 2012, 15 teams will train beneath the palm trees in Central and South Florida, playing a slate of 236 Grapefruit League games throughout March. (The other 15 teams play their preseason games in the Cactus League in Arizona.) For veteran players, it's a chance to shake out the cobwebs, while rookies and journeymen compete for a spot.
Nine of the Grapefruit League parks are clustered on or near the state's west coast, from Dunedin (Toronto Blue Jays), in the Tampa Bay area, south 150 miles or so to Fort Myers. The Minnesota Twins play there at Hammond Stadium, and the Boston Red Sox are this spring debuting a $78 million, 10,000-seat park whose confines are supposed to resemble Fenway Park, complete with a Green Monster left field wall.
The rest of the venues are scattered in Central Florida.
"You're so close to the field," said Brian Hurowitz, who has taken an annual trip down with his father from Long Island for the past 20 years or so to see their beloved New York Yankees in Tampa. "You literally feel like you're in the fourth or fifth row of the major league stadium, even if you're in the last row at a minor league ballpark. It's such a different event."
Spring training and some of the stadiums are as much a part of the fabric of their Florida communities as the teams are back in their permanent cities. The Detroit Tigers have trained in Lakeland since 1930 and have played in the current park, Joker Marchant Stadium, since 1966. The Philadelphia Phillies have played in Clearwater since 1947, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have called Bradenton's McKechnie Field home for the past 43 years, although the place got a complete and much-needed facelift in the 1990s.
Spring training makes Florida tourism officials smile, too. The Grapefruit League stadiums host about 1.5 million people every spring, and a 2009 study showed that its annual economic impact is in the neighborhood of $753 million.

The historic vote paves the way for Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release $170 billion (?130 billion) in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone ? a scenario that would further roil global markets.
But critics worry that the bill, which will reduce the minimum wage by 22 percent and slash one in five civil service jobs, will condemn the Greek economy to an ever-deeper downward spiral.
As lawmakers convened to vote, 100,000 protesters descended on the capitol. At least 45 buildings were burned, including one housing the Asty, an underground cinema used by the Gestapo during World War II as a torture chamber.
As riots raged for hours, police advanced across the square, firing tear gas and stun grenades. Black-masked protesters created a wall of fire with petrol bombs. Loud booms from the protests could be heard inside parliament.

"I've had it! I can't take it anymore. There's no point in living in this country anymore," said a man walking through his smashed and looted optician store.
Violence also spread to six other Greek cities, the worst in central Volos where the town hall and tax office were damaged by fire.
Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos had urged lawmakers to back the bailout reforms, saying the "wrong decision" in the bailout vote would lead to catastrophic default and exit from the euro.
Altogether 199 of the 300 lawmakers backed the bill, but 43 deputies from the two parties in Papademos? government, the socialists and conservatives, rebelled by voting against. They were immediately expelled by their parties.
'Issue of survival'
Since May 2010, Greece has survived on a ?110 billion ($145 billion) bailout from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund. When that proved insufficient, a new rescue loan package worth a further ?130 billion ($171 billion) was decided ? combined with a massive bond swap deal that will write off half the country's privately held debt.
For both deals to materialize, Greece must persuade its deeply skeptical creditors that it has the will and ability to implement spending cuts and public sector reforms that will end years of fiscal profligacy and tame gaping budget deficits.
"Our country has an acute issue of survival," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said.?
"The question is not whether some salaries and pensions will be curtailed, but whether we will be able to pay even these reduced wages and pensions," Venizelos said. "When you have to choose between bad and worse, you will pick what is bad to avoid what is worse."
The new cuts, which follow two years of harsh income losses and tax hikes ? amid a deep recession and record high unemployment ? have been demanded by Greece's bailout creditors in return for a new batch of vital rescue loans.
Pressure from Europe
Euro zone paymaster Germany ratcheted up the pressure on Sunday.
"The promises from Greece aren't enough for us anymore," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in an interview published Sunday in Welt am Sonntag newspaper.
"Greece needs to do its own homework to become competitive, whether that happens in conjunction with a new rescue program or by another route that we actually don't want to take," he said.
When asked if that other route meant Greece quitting the euro zone, Schaeuble said: "That is all in the hands of the Greeks themselves. But even in the event (Greece leaves the euro zone), which almost no one assumes will happen, they will still remain part of Europe."
Introducing the legislation Sunday, Socialist lawmaker Sofia Yiannaka said the intense pressure from Greece's EU partners to pass the measures was the result of delays in implementing already agreed reforms.
"The delays have our imprint. We should not blame foreigners for them," she said.

Theology of Death: Cancer Patients | The Evangelical Calvinist
I have been meaning to write more on my experiences of walking through cancer (between November 2009 and August 2010), and just haven?t much, yet. I am going to start offering some reflections on that in the days and months to come. [my next CT scan is scheduled for this February 28th between 1:15pm (pst) and 3:30pm, please pray for me and my wife that day---pray it is still all good!]
In the mean time, I just came across a reflection (thanks to a friend on Facebook, Daniel Imburgia) offered by Kerry Eagen, over at CNN?s beliefnet, on her experiences as a hospice chaplain amongst cancer patients. She articulates something about the depths of theology that is very important to consider; the primary thing that stands out about her own reflection is the role that love plays as the formative aspect of what it means to be human and spiritual. I think the only thing that provides for a lack in Eagen?s thoughts is the disproportion she gives to what she seems to consider academic or theoretical theology?indeed, that is part of the point of her reflection as you will see. We pick up her reflection mid-stream; she has just been rebuffed by her Harvard Divinity school prof for not having anything substantial to offer dying cancer patients; that is other than her presence and her ear. She writes:
My body went numb with shame.? At the time I thought that maybe, if I was a better chaplain, I would know how to talk to people about big spiritual questions.? Maybe if dying people met with a good, experienced chaplain they would talk about God, I thought.
Today, 13 years later, I am a hospice chaplain.? I visit people who are dying???in their homes, in hospitals, in nursing homes. ??And if you were to ask me the same question ? What do people who are sick and dying talk about with the chaplain? ?? I, without hesitation or uncertainty, would give you the same answer. Mostly, they talk about their families: about their mothers and fathers, their sons and daughters.
They talk about the love they felt, and the love they gave.? Often they talk about love they did not receive, or the love they did not know how to offer, the love they withheld, or maybe never felt for the ones they should have loved unconditionally.
They talk about how they learned what love is, and what it is not.??? And sometimes, when they are actively dying, fluid gurgling in their throats, they reach their hands out to things I cannot see and they call out to their parents:? Mama, Daddy, Mother.
What I did not understand when I was a student then, and what I would explain to that professor now, is that people talk to the chaplain about their families because that is?how?we talk about God.? That is?how?we talk about the meaning of our lives.? That is?how?we talk about the big spiritual questions of human existence.
We don?t live our lives in our heads, in theology and theories.? We live our lives in our families:? the families we are born into, the families we create, the families we make through the people we choose as friends.
This is where we create our lives, this is where we find meaning, this is where our purpose becomes clear.
Family is where we first experience love and where we first give it.? It?s probably the first place we?ve been hurt by someone we love, and hopefully the place we learn that love can overcome even the most painful rejection.
This crucible of love is where we start to ask those big spiritual questions, and ultimately where they end.
I have seen such expressions of love:? A husband gently washing his wife?s face with a cool washcloth, cupping the back of her bald head in his hand to get to the nape of her neck, because she is too weak to lift it from the pillow. A daughter spooning pudding into the mouth of her mother, a woman who has not recognized her for years.
A wife arranging the pillow under the head of her husband?s no-longer-breathing body as she helps the undertaker lift him onto the waiting stretcher.
We don?t learn the meaning of our lives by discussing it.? It?s not to be found in books or lecture halls or even churches or synagogues or mosques.? It?s discovered through these actions of love.
If God is love, and we believe that to be true, then we learn about God when we learn about love. The first, and usually the last, classroom of love is the family.
Sometimes that love is not only imperfect, it seems to be missing entirely.? Monstrous things can happen in families.? Too often, more often than I want to believe possible, patients tell me what it feels like when the person you love beats you or rapes you.? They tell me what it feels like to know that you are utterly unwanted by your parents.? They tell me what it feels like to be the target of someone?s rage.?? They tell me what it feels like to know that you abandoned your children, or that your drinking destroyed your family, or that you failed to care for those who needed you.
Even in these cases, I am amazed at the strength of the human soul.? People who did not know love in their families know that they?should?have been loved.? They somehow know what was missing, and what they deserved as children and adults.
When the love is imperfect, or a family is destructive, something else can be learned:? forgiveness.? The spiritual work of being human is learning how to love and how to forgive.
We don?t have to use words of theology to talk about God; people who are close to death almost never do. We should learn from those who are dying that the best way to teach our children about God is by loving each other wholly and forgiving each other fully ? just as each of us longs to be loved and forgiven by our mothers and fathers, sons and daughters. I remember talking to cancer patients, as I was a fellow cancer patient, when we were receiving chemo next to each other at the clinic. What always surprised me is how most of these folks didn?t want to talk about Jesus; they comforted themselves with other things (they tried!). I understand Kerry?s points, and they are real. But ultimately, talking about family and relationships are not reconciling with God in Christ. There is certainly an integrity to humanity, but without the humanity of Christ as the humanity of these dying patients; there is really nothing noble about any of this. Death is a horrifically ugly thing, and while we don?t need to use language like perichoresis or an/enhypostatic etc. when we are talking to our dying friends and loved ones. We definitely ought to make it a point to bring up Jesus. Jesus talked about theological things, even when he was on the cross; remember his conversation with one of the thieves who was crucified next to Him? He told him that today the believing thief would be with him in paradise. If we really believe in the demonstrated love of Christ at the cross, as the most noble aspect of what it means to be human; then we will make it an absolute point to bring this up, especially when someone is gurgling in their throats with fluids. Their families aren?t going to ?save? them, Jesus will though!

A fourth defeat for Romney? Lack of ads could hurt (AP)
NEW YORK ? Mitt Romney is in danger of losing his fourth straight state in Saturday's caucuses in Maine, where he and his allies have been all but absent from TV.
That's no coincidence.
Over the past month, he has won in states where he and an allied super PAC, called Restore Our Future, have pounded his rivals with millions of dollars in negative ads. But he has tended to lose big when he has stopped using his power to crush other contenders by spending a ton of money ? particularly on TV.
After defeats Tuesday in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, Romney's campaign is bracing for the possibility of more bad news in Maine, where Republicans will announce the results of a weeklong series of caucuses Saturday and where Romney's TV presence has been virtually non-existent. Ron Paul has made a strong play for Maine, making it essentially a two-man contest since Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum aren't actively competing there.
A victory for Paul would make him the fourth candidate to take a Republican contest so far. And the prospect of four consecutive weak performances for Romney raises questions about his durability as the GOP leader absent a barrage of attack ads lobbed at his foes.
"Romney has been the presumed front-runner, which means he's walking around with a big target on his back. So unless he or a super PAC is on the air critiquing the other candidates, voters aren't going to hear a lot of negative messages about them," said Seth Masket, an associate professor of political science at the University of Denver.
The campaign and Restore Our Future spent just under $190,000 on ads altogether to influence Tuesday's caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota. The two groups bought no ads in Missouri, which held a nonbinding primary the same day.
In states where Romney has won:
? He spent $1.2 million in New Hampshire, next door to Massachusetts where he served as governor, compared with $1.7 million for Paul, who placed second. Restore Our Future did not purchase TV ads in New Hampshire.
? In Florida, Romney and his super PAC spent a combined $15.9 million. Gingrich and an allied super PAC, Winning Our Future, spent just over $4 million.
? In Nevada, Romney and his super PAC spent $566,000 on ads. Paul spent $350,000. Gingrich did not purchase any ads in the state, and Santorum placed a minimal cable buy.
? Romney and his allies also spent heavily in South Carolina ? $3.3 million total, compared to about $2 million for Gingrich and his allies. The former Massachusetts governor lost the state to Gingrich, an indication that money won't always lead to a victory.
? In Iowa, Restore Our Future unleashed $2.7 million in negative advertising against Gingrich as polling showed the former House speaker climbing into a lead there weeks before the kickoff caucuses Jan. 3. Gingrich's rise was quickly halted, enabling Santorum to eke out a narrow win over Romney.
Restore Our Future, which is staffed by former Romney aides and has raised nearly $31 million so far, has for months acted as his shadow campaign even though it cannot directly coordinate with Romney's official operation. It's one of many super PACs unleashed by a 2010 Supreme Court ruling easing campaign spending restrictions and has been the most active and influential in the presidential contest so far.
So why did Romney and his allies relinquish using their most powerful campaign tool ? an enormous money advantage that allows them to pummel opponents on the air ? over the past week?
The campaign suggests it's saving resources for higher-profile contests. But Romney's campaign also concedes it didn't expect him to do so poorly this week.
Maine, like the three other states that held contests this week, has seen almost no TV ads from the Romney campaign or Restore Our Future. The campaign has placed a small cable buy for Friday and Saturday in the state's largest city, Portland, according to the Smart Media Group which tracks campaign advertising.
Romney is making a campaign stop in Maine Friday evening in hopes of warding off another blow in a state practically in his backyard. He won the New Hampshire primary resoundingly last month but has faced problems in caucus states that tend to attract strongly conservative base voters.
Romney's advisers are actively downplaying expectations for Maine, the last state to hold a contest before a 17-day break in the electoral calendar. They privately acknowledge that Paul has devoted far more energy there, and they expect the Texas congressman to win or place a strong second.
But Romney certainly wants to avoid losing his fourth consecutive contest.
While he hasn't invested significant resources in broadcast advertising, he recently dispatched high-profile surrogates ? including his eldest son, Tagg ? to Maine. Romney also was hosting a "telephone-town hall" with Maine voters Wednesday night.
"I look forward to seeing you. I'll be coming up to Maine from time to time and enjoy the beauty of your coastline and the beauty of your national parks," Romney said on the call.
He offered an aggressive line of attack against Gingrich and Santorum, but went out of his way to compliment Paul, a former obstetrician turned libertarian champion.
"We've got good guys in this race, the Republicans that I'm running with," Romney said. "Congressman Paul has been a doctor, so he's had real world experience. But the other two guys have spent their lives in Washington. And I just don't think you can change Washington if you've spent your whole life in Washington."
Romney's campaign has suggested that lower-profile contests in Maine, like those in Colorado and Minnesota earlier in the week, simply don't matter as much as the bigger states such as Florida, which he won resoundingly last month. But losing three ? and potentially four ? states in a row has weakened him going into the slow period between now and primaries in Arizona and Michigan Feb. 28.
Speaking to reporters in Atlanta on Wednesday, Romney noted that Sen. John McCain lost almost 20 states on his way to earning the GOP presidential nomination four years ago.
"We expected a long process," he said. "There are big states coming up with a lot of delegates. We'll compete actively there.
Santorum finished a distant third in Florida, but he won all three contests this week, breathing new life into his campaign and exposing Romney's problems attracting the party's most conservative voters.
Other factors contributed to Santorum's strong showing this week, including very low turnout in all three states. Santorum's base of strongly conservative voters made a point of showing up while less committed voters stayed home.
But Romney's shellacking, coming just after back-to-back wins in Florida and Nevada, cast new light on the role negative advertising and super PAC money has played in boosting his candidacy.
