On eve of primary, super PACs ready to unleash (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Look no further than Iowa to understand the impact of a Supreme Court ruling that opened the floodgates to outside money in American politics ? and to get a glimpse of what's in store for the race between President Barack Obama and the eventual Republican nominee.

Independent groups called super political action committees have spent millions on television ads and mailings to boost their favored candidates in Iowa and maim those candidates' rivals, dramatically influencing what's been a remarkably fluid race for the GOP presidential nomination.

The groups have ramped up spending just as the primary season is hitting full-force. Some have done the campaigns' bidding by running attack ads on rivals. Others have bolstered candidates who had been running on financial fumes.

The trend will hardly be unique to Iowa. Political operatives and campaign-finance watchdogs say the 2012 election ? projected to be among the costliest ever ? will face an onslaught of ads by powerful interests that will have an extraordinary say in who might next occupy the Oval Office.

With more than 300 days to go before the general election, the measures of influence are legion: Some TV ads assail Newt Gingrich for "collecting big bucks" from mortgage lender Freddie Mac, and others praise Mitt Romney for "turning around" dozens of companies. One heralded Rick Santorum as a "courageous reformer with results" while another credited Rick Perry for his outside-the-Beltway experience.

Meanwhile, the candidates didn't have to spend a dime of their own money for any of those ads.

"We're going to see huge amounts of money in the course of 2012 spent by the candidate-specific super PACs," said Fred Wertheimer, president of the watchdog group Democracy 21 and a prominent critic of the new groups. "They are vehicles for big donors to circumvent the contribution limits and give money that directly benefits the candidates."

In just one week before the election's first vote, groups like the Romney-leaning super PAC Restore Our Future and the Perry-leaning Make Us Great Again have spent a combined $1.2 million on television ads in Iowa ? a sum greater than what the candidates paid out themselves. On top of that, experts say the ads this primary season are more negative than they were four years ago.

The super PACs are a product of the 2010 Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, which removed restrictions on corporate and union spending in elections. Still, Republican-leaning groups far outpaced their Democratic counterparts in that year's midterm elections, helping Republicans win control of the House and pick up six seats in the Senate.

Nearly two years later, the money is still flowing to GOP candidates.

Take the Gingrich-supportive Winning Our Future super PAC, which is boosting the former House speaker's once-struggling campaign that a few months ago reported $1 million in debt. The group footed the bill in Iowa for more than $191,000 in ads last week supporting Gingrich, whose candidacy surged in December. His campaign spent only a fifth of that amount during the same period.

The group is hardly alone: Since Christmas Day, the Romney-leaning Restore Our Future spent nearly $130,000 on direct-mail ads and at least $1.2 million on ads supporting the former Massachusetts governor while also hammering Perry, federal data show.

And Endorse Liberty, a super PAC supporting Texas Rep. Ron Paul, put much of its money into the web and social media. It spent at least $100,000 on Google's AdWords service and about $40,000 on Facebook commercials during the same period.

For their part, super PAC operatives make no apologies for what they say is legally protected free speech. They have been upfront about their motives: Groups like the Karl Rove-backed American Crossroads have promised to spend tens of millions in the general election to defeat Obama. On the other side of the aisle, former Obama aide Bill Burton runs the super PAC Priorities USA Action, joining a handful of similar Democratic-oriented super groups.

Some GOP-leaning groups say their ads contribute to a marketplace of ideas, counterbalancing the huge sums of cash that Obama and the Democratic National Committee plan to spend on the president's re-election bid. Democrats say they have to push back forcefully against attacks on Obama's record.

By law, presidential campaigns can raise at most $5,000 total from an individual donor. But super PACs can solicit and spend unlimited money. Some employ affiliated groups whose donors are allowed to remain anonymous.

The super PACs can't, however, coordinate directly with candidates but many of the super PACs active in this election are staffed by longtime supporters of the candidates.

Looking ahead past the Iowa caucuses, the groups' impact is set to remain strong: Make Us Great Again, a super PAC that supports Perry's candidacy, recently booked at least $130,000 for TV spots for this week in South Carolina, which holds its critical primary on Jan. 21. At the time, Perry's campaign had yet to spend a dollar on similar ads.

ATF Agent Killed in Pharmacy Robbery Getting Dad's Cancer Meds, Dead Suspect Identified as James McGoey

A Long Island?pharmacy's alleged robber, whose crime led to the death of an off-duty law officer Saturday, has been identified by Nassau Country police as 43-year-old James McGoey,?according to an AP report.

Agent John Capano of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was in the?parking lot of a shopping center?on?Merrick Road in Seaford,?N.Y., around 2 p.m. when the gunman entered the pharmacy and robbed it of OxyContin and cash. Capano was picking up cancer medication for his father, according to published reports.

Several patrons were able to flee the store during the robbery and then identified the suspect to Capano as the man exited.?Capano immediately confronted the suspect and a struggle ensued as?Capano attempted to disarm him.

A retired Nassau County police officer and an off-duty New York City police officer who happened to be in a deli next door were also alerted. They came out of the deli and discovered the men struggling. One of the officers fired at them, killing the suspect.?Capano was also fatally wounded during the shooting, according to the official report on the ATF website.

Capano, who lived in Massapequa and was married with two children, was a 23-year veteran of the ATF, and had taught blast investigation in Afganistan to both U.S. military and local forces there.

"He was a veteran agent who did his job well," O'Connor told AP. "Even though off-duty, he felt the need to take action in an attempt to protect the public."

End-of-the-year iPad 3 rumors: two versions, better battery, new display tech (Appolicious)

Wait, wait! There?s still roughly 36 hours left before it?s 2012 ? we can definitely slip in one last iPad 3 rumor round-up.

The latest two rumors suggest Apple is working on upgraded components for the next version of its super-popular iPad, which is expected to show up on shelves next spring, in keeping with Apple?s yearly device refreshes. The new rumors come from DigiTimes, the Asian publication that gets its information from up-stream supply chain manufacturers that Apple uses to produce the parts for its devices. All of the sources are anonymous, as usual, so it?s impossible to tell if DigiTimes information will actually prove to be close to the truth or altogether hogwash.

The first rumor claims that Apple is working on a better battery life for the next iPad, which would increase its charge capacity from the currently used 6,500 milliampere-hour to 14,000mAH. DigiTimes cites ?industry sources? for the lead, but states that Apple?s battery manufacturers, Symplo Tech and Dynapack, refused to comment about their client Apple or its devices.

This one might have some truth behind it. When it comes to Apple?s mobile devices, the company will often sacrifice power or cutting-edge hardware if building those things into its devices would cut too deeply into battery life. Apple prides itself on its devices being useful for a long time, so if the Cupertino tech giant is doing things to the iPad like adding a high-definition Retina display, as we?ve heard over and over, it might need a stronger battery to keep the device going.

DigiTimes? sources also told the publication that we should expect two versions of the iPad 3 when it?s released in 2012: a high-end version and a mid-range version. It?s the high-end version that will be seeing the bigger, better battery.

And speaking of displays, we have one more rumor to throw down. Another DigiTimes report claims that Apple might be going with a new kind of display for next year?s tablet. The rumor says Apple is switching from IPS, or in-plane switching, display panels it uses currently on the iPad 2 to indium gallium zinc oxide flat panels. Those new panels will reportedly be produced by Sharp, and are necessary to get the iPad 3 up to true HD levels, according to DigiTimes? sources.

This one makes some sense, too. As GigaOM points out, we?ve heard before that Apple wants to get a high-definition Retina display into its next iPad. As was speculated by Jeffries analyst Peter Misek, using IGZO displays would allow Apple to get up to a resolution of 330 pixels-per-inch. That?s slightly better than the iPhone 4?s 326 ppi, which Apple calls its ?Retina? display. It might not hurt also that Sharp is reportedly the manufacturer providing the displays, and not Samsung, with whom Apple is currently embroiled in tons of patent disputes.

DigiTimes has been wrong before (plenty of times), but its rumors do sometimes provide insights into what?s going on with the technical side of Apple?s mobile operations. Some of these rumors make some degree of sense, but of course, we?ll be well into 2012 before we find out for sure. Still, it?s fun to try to guess what the next iPad will be like months before it?s out. Happy New Year!
