Deadspin NBA Shit List: Andray Blatche, Who Has No Idea

Deadspin NBA Shit List: Andray Blatche, Who Has No IdeaA celebration of the NBA's most infuriating players, both past and present. Read other NBA Shit List entries here.

It is Oct. 17, my wedding anniversary. I am standing in front of the St. Regis hotel in Manhattan. It's cold and windy, and I am embarrassingly underdressed (tourist that I am). My nose is running, and I want a drink. Very suddenly, I am all alone.

What has happened? Did I say something? My wife is barreling through the crowd on the corner, headed very quickly away from me?did I say something? Honey? Oh?now she's yelling something over her shoulder. Honey!

It's Jake Gyllenhaal! Hurry!

Now I'm racing after her. Not because I care about Jake Gyllenhaal. No?I'm chasing my wife along 55th Street in the biting cold because if she gets to Jake Gyllenhaal before I get to her, I will never see her again. And this will make for one seriously deflating wedding anniversary, with me sobbing alone over a plate of pasta at a romantic anniversary dinner-for-one, and my wife passionately fellating a celebrity uptown.

And where is this man? Honey, where is he ... that's him? Yes, there he is, the man racing away from us, alone and inconspicuous. Or, really, that could be any man, hidden as he is under a green hoodie and shades with a beard. We are not alone in our pursuit?a group of teenagers is hot on his trail, closing in. They are in a full sprint. Luckily for Jake, he hits the intersection before they make contact, jogs into the intersection, stops traffic, jogs on. Here is a serious man, aware of his visibility, protecting his privacy. What is he doing out here? Exercising? We will never know. I am unwilling to run after Jake Gyllenhaal, and my wife succumbs to the pull of loyalty and/or guilt. Alas, she will not be making sweet, sweet love to Jake Gyllenhaal on our eighth wedding anniversary. I will have to apologize for this over dinner, I'm sure.

And there he goes, is going, is gone. We turn back, the teens abandon their pursuit, and Jake blends into the next crowd and moves on. Is that a lonely existence? It seems lonely. Boy, being famous must stink. I make sure to hammer this point as my crestfallen life-partner resigns herself to a night of sitting across a dinner table from me instead of straddling a wealthy, world-famous heartthrob. Being famous stinks. He looked miserable.

Minutes later we're preparing to cross Park Avenue, and there is a sweatsuit-clad tree in my way. A tree? Here, on the corner of Park Avenue? In a gray sweatsuit? Can't be. Oh honey, look, it's Andray Blatche. Andray Blatche and an entourage. Four smaller men, also in gray sweatsuits. Who is Andray Blatche? He's just a lousy basketball player who used to play poorly for the Wizards. He is known now more for being booed by the home crowd for half a season than for anything accomplished on the court.

She declines to give chase.

Andray Blatche is a ridiculous sight tucked into a crowd of tourists and shoppers and working types, crossing a busy intersection on a Wednesday. He's not just the tallest person there; he's more than a foot taller than anyone else. I watch as the walk sign flashes and the group moves into the intersection. I seem to be the only person within eyesight who cares that a nominal NBA player is among us. There, without the remotest concern, is a famous basketball player, looming outrageously over two dozen or more fellow crosswalkers, surrounded by a group of identically clad friends, somehow totally anonymous to everyone in sight. I feel downright stupid for knowing or caring. Blatche, for his part, looks content. He doesn't wear the misery of fame quite as obviously as Jake Gyllenhaal.

The differences between these two men are too numerous to count, but among them are these: 1. Jake Gyllenhaal is much more talented than Andray Blatche; 2. Jake Gyllenhaal is much more famous than Andray Blatche. 3. Andray Blatche made twice as much money last year as Jake Gyllenhaal made for starring in Jarhead. Also, Andray Blatche is everything that is wrong with the NBA, which goes a long way toward explaining No. 3. Andray Blatche is why there is an amnesty clause in the new collective bargaining agreement. The $28 million contract extension he received in 2007 is still the second-worst example of Ernie Grunfeld's ineptitude as an NBA general manager. He was such a burden both on the court and on the books that the Wizards chose to amnesty his contract instead of Rashard Lewis's, which was only the worst contract in NBA history. Blatche is my least favorite NBA player, maybe ever.

Look at this fucking shit:

Deadspin NBA Shit List: Andray Blatche, Who Has No Idea

This is a man who airballs fadeaway jumpers and pounds layups off the side of the backboard, who was once whistled for a travel in a game against the Orlando Magic when he airballed a wide-open, one-handed dunk and then caught the ball on the other side of the rim. He doesn't play defense so much as exist fatly in a designated space. He defends his man the way a throw pillow defends a sofa cushion. In response to an undercover officer who had asked him, "What do you want, head or fuck?" Blatche once responded, "Well, I want both"?a sort of double dribble, characteristically.

How is it, then, that this man once felt secure publicly declaring himself a team leader, a team captain? And, after the first game of the 2011 season, demanding a greater share of the team's offense? How could he possibly have believed himself?

If the whole basketball-watching world knew Blatche was a bum, what did he think of himself? He needed more offense? He's a leader?

Is it possible that Andray Blatche thinks he's great?

Surely, nothing is learned of the nature of greatness and nothing is gleaned of a person's claims to the stuff from watching someone cross an intersection. Still, as I watch him saunter across Park Avenue, sycophants in tow, surrounded by an oblivious herd of pedestrians, I wonder: What does Andray Blatche think of himself? Is he self-conscious? Everyone here knows I suck. Is he private? I don't want to be bothered by fans. Is he strutting? I'm the baddest motherfucker out here. Does he feel the heat of my gaze? Who would be more embarrassed if we locked eyes? Is he aware, as I am, that no one recognizes him? How does he feel about this?

There's an odd paradox at play and I struggle to comprehend it: an outsized, famous man flanked by a protective entourage among an utterly ambivalent throng of pedestrians. One person in a thousand recognizes him. A famous man moving anonymously through an uncaring crowd, shielded from their vacant fandom by an entourage. His friends aren't protecting him from his fans; his friends are protecting him from their absence.

I think to myself that LeBron James would never be anonymous in this or any crowd. I think maybe no other athlete of Blatche's size could so easily wander around in a herd of tourists. I tell myself he must know that. He must.

Seconds are ticking by; Blatche is walking away. I try to make my cold fingers operate my cell phone?I want a picture of Blatche. Why? No one will care. Not one person on earth will have the remotest interest that I passed Andray Blatche in Manhattan. He will be an odd, anticlimactic finish to a story of my wife attempting to leave me for Jake Gyllenhaal on the day of our anniversary. Also, we ran into Andray Blatche. Who? Oh, he used to play for the Wi- yeah, Gyllenhaal was awesome in Donnie Darko.

This isn't working. He's nearing the edge of my line of sight. If I was unwilling to chase Jake Gyllenhaal, surely my wife will not abide my following Andray Blatche. I fumble with the phone. Blatche grows smaller. In haste, I raise my phone and slide something and tap something else and tap tap tap. Have I taken a picture? Have I captured this moment?

There is a picture. It is of a man in a gray sweatsuit at the edge of a mass of people. He is rounding a corner, only half of him is visible. He is lean and muscular and young-looking, and he is maybe 6 feet tall. Blatche is nowhere to be seen.

That photo contains all the trappings of greatness. There is a famous NBA basketball player's entourage, right there. And this is the story of Andray Blatche: an amazingly large young man, blessed with length and health and athleticism, blessed with just enough work ethic to develop all those flossy little skills but not enough to make them matter, wealthy beyond my wildest dreams, demanding the ball, bestowing upon himself the role of team leader, looking for all the world like an NBA superstar. And he's the only one who doesn't know the truth: that Andray Blatche is a bum, an afterthought, a footnote to another story. An entourage protecting nobody.

He doesn't know. It is everything I have always hated about him. He has no idea how not great he is. Andray Blatche is the best, most talented player in Andray Blatche's NBA, and hell if he's going to work to prove it to anyone. It is the fault of those who don't assert his greatness that they are unable to recognize it. This is how a career 9.9 PPG player, a forward who once shot .380 from the floor over the course of a season, a 7-footer who airballs dunks, can demand a greater share of the offense and refer to himself as a leader. He has no fucking clue.

My wife is looking at me funny. I think she misses Jake Gyllenhaal already. It's time for that drink. I grimace once more at the photo and delete it.

* * *

A coda: It is, of course, a fulfillment of Blatche's evil destiny that he would spend the 2013 season tormenting Wizards fans by demonstrating a surprising aptitude for, of all things, basketball, and not, as one might otherwise predict, eating fast food. Perhaps it speaks poorly for John Hollinger's PER that it is a measure by which Andray Blatche rates as one of the NBA's 10 best players, but by any criteria worth using he has been a much improved player so far this season, and on a fringe contender to boot. I like to think Brooklyn's general underperformance and Avery Johnson's firing are a part of that same Blatchey destiny, and because he is constitutionally incapable of being known for just playing good basketball (or really any kind of basketball), he's gone and worked his way into smelling distance of a sexual assault perpetrated by that entourage. No one is yet sure how this situation will play out and it appears as though Blatche will not be charged with any crime, but those who'd bothered to hope that Blatche's maturation as a basketball player had continued in all facets of his life will be disappointed to hear that he'd stood on the threshold and acted as doorman while an allegedly criminal sex act unfolded in his own hotel room. He supposedly took some photos. too.

In Washington it was miserable basketball and a solicitation charge; in Brooklyn it's good basketball and possible gang rape. At this rate, God forbid he ever make an All-Star Game.

NUM to 'engage' Anglo Platinum in bid to save 14 000 jobs

The National Union of Mineworkers plans to negotiate with Anglo American Platinum to prevent the company from retrenching 14 000 workers, the union says.

"The NUM will engage the company in a bid to save these jobs and appeals on workers to work together to safeguard their own jobs," said NUM general secretary Frans Baleni.

Earlier, Anglo American Platinum said it could cut up to 14 000 jobs in a major restructuring at its strike-hit South African operations.

The firm would close four shafts and sell a mine considered unsustainable, reported Agence France-Presse.

"As a result of the proposed changes to the business, a total of up to 14 000 jobs may be affected, 13 000 of which will be in the Rustenburg area," Anglo Platinum said.

The NUM said Anglo Platinum's decision to cut jobs was "shocking".

"The NUM has repeatedly called upon workers to unite in order to defeat the evil nature of capitalism, which seeks to put profits first and humanity last," said Baleni.

Maria Waltherr-Willard Pedophobia: Ohio Teacher Sues School District For Discriminating Against Her Fear Of Children

Retired Ohio teacher Maria Waltherr-Willard is suing her school district, claiming it discriminated against her because of her disability -- a debilitating phobia of young children.

Waltherr-Willard, 61, claims in her lawsuit against the Mariemont school district that for 35 years, she taught Spanish and French to high school students in the system. But when she helped fight the district's decision to cut French class in favor of an online course, officials retaliated by reassigning her to younger students at a middle school in 2009, ignoring her hypertension, specific phobia and general anxiety disorder, Waltherr-Willard says, according to Cincinnati.com.

She claims that district officials were previously sympathetic and aware of her medically diagnosed pedophobia.

While the public and a number of commentators have taken to ridicule the teacher and her lawsuit, Dr. Caleb Adler, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience at the University of Cincinnati, says it's a serious phobia, as the illness causes Walterr-Willard to experience stress, anxiety, chest pains, vomiting, nightmares and high blood pressure when she's near young children.

"It's a tough phobia. You can't really get away from [children] when you're outside," Adler told Cincinnati.com. "When you're a teacher, it may not be an issue with older students."

Working with younger children at the middle school "adversely affected [Waltherr-Willard's] health, due to her disability," the lawsuit claims, according to ABC News. Although she reportedly helped the younger students succeed in their foreign language endeavors, the move still increased her blood pressure to levels that placed her at risk for a stroke.

When the district denied her request to transfer back to the high school for the 2010-2011 academic year, Waltherr-Willard was forced into early retirement at the age of 59, the suit claims.

A federal judge has dismissed three of Walterr-Willard's claims in the suit, arguing that the district violated an implied contract to keep her away from young students. The three remaining discrimination claims are awaiting district response, and a tentative trial date is set for February 2014.

Walterr-Willard seeks past and future pay, compensatory damages, punitive damages and attorneys' fees.

Former President George H.W. Bush released from Houston hospital after nearly 2 months

HOUSTON - Former President George H.W. Bush was released from a Houston hospital and went home Monday after spending nearly two months being treated for a bronchitis-related cough and other health issues, a family spokesman said.

Bush, 88, the nation's oldest living former president, was admitted to Methodist Hospital on Nov. 23. His stay included a week in intensive care last month.

"I am deeply grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Methodist who took such good care of me," Bush said in a statement released by spokesman Jim McGrath. "Let me add just how touched we were by the many get-well messages we received from our friends and fellow Americans. Your prayers and good wishes helped more than you know, and as I head home my only concern is that I will not be able to thank each of you for your kind words."

Bush had been in the hospital for about a month before his office disclosed in late December that he was in intensive care because physicians were having difficulty controlling a fever that developed after the cough improved.

His office said on Dec. 29 that he had been moved back to a regular hospital room. Since then, his condition has continued to improve and he has been undergoing physical therapy to rebuild his strength.

"Mr. Bush has improved to the point that he will not need any special medication when he goes home, but he will continue physical therapy," Amy Mynderse, the doctor in charge of Bush's care, said in Monday's statement.

Bush's office said he was treated for a bacterial infection, along with the bronchitis and cough.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine. On Jan. 6, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. They are the longest-married presidential couple.

"The problem now is he's no longer going to be pampered by all these nurses and health care providers in the hospital; now his caregiver is Barbara Bush," Bush's son, Jeb, the former governor of Florida, joked Monday at an education forum in Nashville, Tenn.

"Now I'm going to have to call my mother and apologize," he quickly added.

Bush had served two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president when he was elected in 1988 to be the nation's 41st president. Four years later, after a term highlighted by the success of the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, he lost to Democrat Bill Clinton amid voter concerns about the economy.

Bush has a long record of service, beginning with his enlistment in the Navy in World War II. At one point, he was the nation's youngest naval aviator. He was shot down in the Pacific and rescued by an American submarine. He's also been a congressman from Texas, U.S. ambassador to China and CIA director.

He suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease that has forced him in recent years to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair to get around.

  • Did you know ... ?

A chemical available through Klean Corp International is a testament to the work that went into developing it.

DFD 120, a product used when commissioning power plants, got its name because the company failed 119 times before finding the perfect formula, said Robby Burdge, KCI's cultural excellence officer.

"You've gotta work at it," he said. "It doesn't come easy."

Robby Burdge remembers the day not too long ago when he first made his way to the Lone Star State.

It was 1980, and the economy had tanked, he said, when he showed up looking for work.

"I came down to Texas with $85 and a full tank of gas," he said, recalling that day was the first and only time he saw a Cadillac with horns attached to the front. "I remember thinking, 'Yep, I'm in Texas now.'"

From humble beginnings, however, Burdge dug in. Today, he not only owns his own company but also keeps heavily involved throughout the Crossroads area.

"I have truly lived the American Dream," he said.

Getting his start

The self-made businessman was born in Norwalk, Ohio, as the youngest of eight children.

His father's military career meant the family lived everywhere from Newfoundland to Germany and Washington, D.C., he said, but Scott Air Force Base near Belleville, Ill., was where they eventually called home.

Burdge said the family never had much money, but hard work meant there was always food on the table and a roof over their heads. He remembered selling newspapers on street corners to help make ends meet.

"I started that before kindergarten," he said. "You wouldn't think of doing that now. But I've worked for as long as I can remember."

That initial start might have come from sales, but it was engineering - taking a strategic look at the big plants and how they worked - that really caught his eye and set him down his path.

Striking out on his own

Burdge worked a number of engineering and construction jobs through the years but got his start in Texas as a Houston boilermaker. It was a profession he knew next to nothing about, he said, but he went after it.

"They said they were hiring five people, so I raised my hand," he said. "Then I asked the guy next to me, 'What's a boilermaker?'"

Burdge moved on to Victoria, where he took work first with the Vistron plant - now known as Ineos - and later constructing the DuPont facility before taking positions in Austin and Houston.

The family set down permanent Victoria roots in 1990, he said, while he commuted to and from his work with a Houston chemical company.

For a man who takes decisions seriously - he never makes an important move without first taking a shower to mull it over - the choice to start a business came quickly.

When Burdge disagreed with the direction the chemical company was headed after a new company took over, he opted out.

"I resigned," he said. "I can still remember just sitting at a rest stop outside Victoria, trying to figure out how I was going to tell my wife I'd quit my job."

It was a dashboard photo of his daughter, Casey, that gave him the inspiration, Burdge explained, and he had his initial business plan written up on the back of a receipt and a napkin before he reached home.

Thus, Klean Corp International - or KCI, named after Casey - was born Oct. 9, 1997.

With one sale to Formosa and a contract with Union Carbide, the company that "moved matter out of place," flushing systems to keep them running smoothly, was in business.

Building his business

Burdge said business ownership was never easy - 2008's economic downturn, which led a number of projects to fall by the wayside, was a particular rough patch - but it carried more high points than anything else.

One such incident was a KCI breakthrough that came when a client needed a strong acid to clean its system but wouldn't harm the pipes. When the crew reverse-engineered the products it already offered, it came across a surprise.

"We developed something but by complete accident. It's even safe to human tissue," he said with a smile about what the company dubbed its SafeKlean Series. "We were green before green was cool."

The company saw growth with time, he said, but 2013 - dubbed "The Year," - will be particularly important as KCI is undergoing a complete overhaul.

Burdge said the business plans to go paperless by incorporating new technology such as iPads and will introduce a new chemical blending process. Training recently moved to Victoria College's new KCI Academy, while new distribution methods and a larger facility on John Stockbauer Drive will also join the mix.

Factor in the fact that daughter Casey Burdge Staudt joined on this month as CEO-in-training, and the changes are a bit overwhelming, Burdge said.

"We're changing so much at one time that it's really outside our comfort zones," he said. "It's extremely scary, but we can do it."

Burdge has other projects on his plate as well, including his role as part-owner of The Club at Colony Creek and plans to bring New York-style lofts to downtown Victoria. With their November purchase of Shannon Bradley Pools, Burdge and his brother-in-law will soon rename the business Burdge-O'Donnell Pools.

Giving back

The father of two serves as KCI's CEO, which stands for cultural excellence - not chief executive - officer. That differentiation, he said, comes because he doesn't want to work just in his company but on it.

It's the same philosophy he applies to his work in the community.

Burdge volunteers his time to organizations throughout the region, he said, serving as co-chairman of the St. Joseph High School Capital Campaign with wife Tami Burdge, as facilities chairman for Victoria College, as board chairman for the Port of Victoria and more.

"Balance has always been a challenge for me," he said with a laugh. "For some reason, I can never get the word 'N-O' out."

Omar Rachid, who served as co-chairman of the Victoria County United Way 2008 campaign with Burdge, has worked alongside him in numerous organizations. He described Burdge as a humble man and strong leader.

His "we're all in this together" philosophy, which Burdge employs both inside and outside KCI, helps motivate others to get involved as well, he said.

"When he gets involved, he's involved 100 percent," Rachid said. "He's an awesome human being. Once you get to work with him and get to know him, you love him."

That involvement shows Burdge cares about the community and wants to see good things happen, said Randy Vivian, president and CEO of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

Burdge was named the chamber's citizen of the year in 2011 and 2003.

"He's a great community leader and philanthropist and a good friend," Vivian said. "He's a phenomenal man."

As for Burdge, he said he appreciated the recognition but found it a bit embarrassing.

Nonprofit work is a passion, he said, and he had help every step of the way. He couldn't do any of it without his KCI team, he said, whose members work just as hard as he does.

Still, he said, he's grateful to have a part in it all.

"It's easy to be an instrument in God's band," he said. "Sometimes you're playing the guitar, sometimes the drum and sometimes you're sweeping the floor. But as long as you stay in the band, it's OK."

Science News from the Fisher Scientific Blog ? Prostate Cancer UK ...

by Tania

Prostate Cancer SlideCharity Prostate Cancer UK has launched a new campaign after discovering that the disease is one of the most neglected in terms of research funds. Advertisements featuring well-known British comedian Bill Bailey will be put on air, in print and online, encouraging people to contribute to the Sledgehammer Fund.

This is the most common form of cancer in men and the fourth most widespread overall ? approximately 36,000 males in the UK are diagnosed each year, according to the NHS. An affected person?s chance of survival depends on their general health, as well as the size, grade and spread of disease. It kills around 10,000 people annually.

Despite these high morbidity rates, prostate cancer is 20th in the table demonstrating annual research expenditure per case. The government and charities allocated just over ?17 million to the cause in 2011. Even though it is responsible for a similar numbers of deaths each year, breast cancer receives over double this funding ? ?853 per diagnosis.

This may be because of increased awareness relating to the female-dominant cancer. Charities aiming to support sufferers and provide money to experimenters have launched successful campaigns like Tickled Pick, which capture the public?s attention and encourage donations. Prostate Cancer UK may hope to mimic this, and educate the population about the prevalence of the disease.

Chief executive at the charity Owen Sharp said: ?Prostate cancer is the UK?s best kept worst secret. [It] is simply not on the radar in the UK. Even though it kills one man every hour [...] most men and women don?t know enough about it. We need to follow the lead of the successful female movement against breast cancer and create a real change for men.?

By facilitating scientific research, more effective diagnostics could be developed. This could have a significant impact on outcomes, since treatments can be extremely effective if they are implemented in early stages of the disease. Removing the affected gland from the pelvis or using radiotherapy to destroy cancerous cells are the most common techniques.

Why Are Investors In Like With Facebook Again?

If you're a casual observer of the stock market, the last time you tuned in to what was happening with Facebook's stock was probably last May.

In those days after the company's long-anticipated initial public offering, its price was diving daily ? exactly the opposite of what many had expected given the hype leading up to Facebook's IPO.

The IPO itself was full of technical problems ? many buyers weren't sure if their orders went through. And then there were questions about whether Facebook could figure out how to make money in its fastest-growing segment ? mobile.

What a difference several months make. Since the start of 2013, Facebook's stock has jumped 19 percent, closing at $31.72 on Friday. It's up nearly 81 percent since its rock-bottom low of $17.55 on Sept. 4.

"The trend is clear from the start of the year, with few days of declines in between; investors have found new love for the social giant," says The Next Web. It didn't hurt that a Merrill Lynch report predicted that in 2014 Facebook's mobile revenue will top the money it makes from its desktop users.

There's also speculation that Facebook will have something big to say at a press event next Tuesday. The company teased reporters with an invitation to "come and see what we're building."

Bloomberg said Facebook could use the event "to assuage user concerns about ad policy changes for its Instagram photo-sharing service." Seeking Alpha has rounded up rumors about the event, which include the recurring idea that Facebook will launch its own smartphone.

Seeking Alpha contributor Timothy Phillips thinks Facebook is likely to tout an e-commerce strategy. It has "already quietly entered the e-commerce business through its proprietary gift service (through the acquisition of Karma), which I think can be a real game changing concept for how consumers purchase," he wrote.

Facebook is looking at all kinds of ways to make money off its 1 billion users. For instance, the company could charge users to send messages to popular people on Facebook. Mashable discovered a test in which users could send CEO Mark Zuckerberg a message ? "for a cool $100."

"Keen Facebook observers will recognize this as a variant on the $1 pay-to-message plan that the social network has been experimenting with for months. The company indicated at the time that it would be experimenting with other prices, so it's possible we're starting to see the fruits of that."

The Wall Street Journal's Digits blog points out that Facebook sees this as a way to reduce incoming spam for high-profile Facebook users: "For a normal user, $1 might seem like a lot to send a message to a friend, but for a fan to ensure that someone like Justin Bieber receives a message, it might not be that much."

Teach kids to choose from variety of healthy foods for a balanced diet

TORONTO, Cananda - Letting kids pick what they'd like to eat from a range of healthy choices will go far to ensure they have a balanced diet and make mealtimes more enjoyable, says a Toronto dietitian.

Cara Rosenbloom, who advises on healthy eating with her nutrition communications company Words to Eat By, has two young children, so she knows firsthand what parents and caregivers have to deal with on a daily basis.

She has come to value, in her work life and at home, information from Ellyn Satter, a dietitian, social worker and psychotherapist in Madison, Wis.

"Her advice is so straightforward and it works really well: As the parent you're responsible for providing a variety of healthy food choices and the child's responsibility is deciding which foods they want to eat from among those healthy choices and how much they want to eat," Rosenbloom explains.

"And if parents can remember that really simple division of responsibility it makes mealtime a lot more calm and easy and relaxed and it helps children not develop really picky or finicky eating habits."

Rosenbloom, 39, finds many parents initially pooh-pooh the idea, saying their children will eat just one thing or will eat too much but counters by saying "children have an amazing innate ability to know when they're hungry or when they're full."

And don't make children clear their plates. "If you force-feed kids, make them eat certain foods or make them eat a certain amount of food, that will override their natural ability to know when they're hungry and full, and when they lose that ability, that's when they overeat and that's when they gain weight. So it's really important to trust a child's appetite."

Provide items from Canada's Food Guide ? grains (especially whole grains), vegetables and fruit, milk and alternatives like cheese or yogurt, and lean meat, beans or fish ? at mealtime and your kids will choose a balanced meal.

Rosenbloom lets her children ? Kasey, 5, and Aubrey, 1 ? see what's on the table and choose what they want to eat.

"They're encouraged to try everything. If they don't like something they don't have to finish it, and if they do like it, that's fantastic and they can have more and I don't limit how much they're allowed to have of healthy foods," she says. "If they're hungry they eat more, and if they're full they stop eating."

It's OK for kids to have additional helpings if they want it.

"Kids grow at very different rates. One day they can have a big appetite because they're having a growth spurt and eat three or four helpings and the next day they might not be that hungry at all. That's totally normal," Rosenbloom says.

"Listen to your child's appetite. Of course not with things like chocolate cookies and chips.... But if they want some more broccoli and some more pasta and another piece of chicken, then let them eat."

It may take a few weeks for the kids to get used to eating this way.

"But when you stop bothering your kids about making sure that they eat certain portion sizes of different foods, the kids are relieved and when that stress is gone, that control is gone and they just enjoy eating as a family."

For children who don't have big appetites or eat a small variety of foods, it's important that what they do consume packs a nutritional punch in every bite.

Whole-grain bread has more fibre than white or whole-wheat bread.

If kids have a sweet tooth, supply foods that are naturally sweet but also have nutritional value, such as fruit.

Chocolate milk has some added sugar but still has the 16 nutrients found in plain milk, such as calcium, vitamin D and riboflavin.

"Sure, they're getting a couple of teaspoons of sugar, but look what else they're getting," Rosenbloom points out.

Yogurt with fruit has calcium and other vitamins and nutrients.

Dietitians find that children's diets are often deficient in DHA, a type of omega-3 fatty acid vital for normal development of the brain, eyes and nerves. It's important for children, especially those under age two, as well as for pregnant women.

One reason is the No. 1 source of DHA is fish, and a lot of kids don't love fish. Make it more kid-friendly ? try salmon cakes, incorporate cooked fish in sushi rolls and make salmon sandwiches.

Other sources are eggs enriched with omega-3, and milk and yogurt that have been enriched with naturally occurring DHA. The hens and cows have been given feeds that are richer in omega-3 fats, resulting in eggs and milk that are naturally richer in DHA. Not all brands contain it ? check labels. Two to try are Dairy Oh! milk and L'Il Ones yogurt.

Teach children the difference between a snack and a treat.

A snack is a mini meal ? cheese and crackers, cereal and milk, yogurt, fresh fruit, vegetables and dip. Kids need snacks for energy to carry them through the day.

"A treat for us is something that has lots of added sugar, lots of fat, things like cookies, chips, candy and ice cream," she adds.

"And those we don't have every day. Those are not things we bring to school to give you energy. Those are things we have at birthday parties, on the weekend, after dinner as dessert once in a while."

Brown eyes appear more trustworthy than blue: People judge men's trustworthiness based on face shape, eye color

Jan. 9, 2013 ? People view brown-eyed faces as more trustworthy than those with blue eyes, except if the blue eyes belong to a broad-faced man, according to research published Jan. 9 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Karel Kleisner and colleagues from Charles University in the Czech Republic.

The study's results attempt to answer a larger question: What makes us think a person's face looks trustworthy? The authors asked study participants to rate male and female faces for trustworthiness based on two features: eye color and face shape. A significant number of participants found brown-eyed faces more trustworthy than blue-eyed, whether the faces were male or female. More rounded male faces, with bigger mouths and larger chins, were perceived as more trustworthy than narrow ones, but the shape of a female face did not have much effect on how trustworthy it appeared to the respondents.

To test which of the two features were more important, the researchers tried a third test, presenting participants with photographs of male faces that were identical except for one difference: eye color. Here, they found that both eye colors were considered equally trustworthy. According to the study, "We concluded that although the brown-eyed faces were perceived as more trustworthy than the blue-eyed ones, it was not brown eye color per se that caused the stronger perception of trustworthiness but rather the facial features associated with brown eyes."

Official: Student opens fire at Calif. high school, wounding 2

Taft Union High School (Bobak Ha'Eri/Wikimedia Commons)

At least one person was shot when a gunman opened fire at a high school in California on Thursday morning, authorities there say.

The shooting occurred in the science building at Taft Union High School in Taft, Calif., at approximately 9 a.m. local time, a Kern County Sheriff's official told Yahoo News.

The sheriff's official said the suspected shooter?a student at the school?was taken into custody, and a shotgun was recovered at the scene.

One victim, a fellow student, was airlifted to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, Calif., with a shotgun wound to the upper right chest, the official said. The extent of the student's injuries were not known.

A second person, identified by the official as a teacher at the school, was also injured, but declined medical treatment. The injury?does not appear to be related to the shooting itself, the official said.

According to the school's website, "two campus supervisors and a Kern County Sheriff monitor the campus before, during, and after school." The sheriff's official did not know whether the officer was on duty at the time of the shooting. About 1,000 students attend the high school.

ABC's Kero-Bakersfield affiliate said it received calls from students who were hiding in closets inside the school, located about 120 miles north of Los Angeles.

Students were evacuated while sheriff and fire personnel conducted room-to-room searches. One student told the network that he was in another building participating in an "active shooter drill" when the shooting occurred.

The high school was featured in the 1986 film "The Best of Times" starring Robin Williams and Kurt Russell.

The shootings come less than a month after 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. The massacre led to calls for reforms to the country's gun laws.

On Thursday, Vice President Joe Biden, appointed to lead a task force to reduce U.S. gun violence, was scheduled to meet with members of the National Rifle Association in Washington to discuss gun control.

Quitting Smoking: 10 Reasons That Have Nothing To Do With Your ...

It's no secret that smoking raises the risk of a whole gamut of health problems, from cancer, to lung disease, to early death. And that's why we at Healthy Living are glad that quitting smoking is one of the top New Year's resolutions people make.

In fact, a recent study conducted by Legacy, a quit-smoking advocacy organization, shows that resolving to quit smoking is becoming more in vogue -- twice as many people reported making quitting smoking a resolution this year, compared with last, MyHealthNewsDaily reported.

But aside from lowering your risk of scary conditions, there's a whole other list of reasons why it's good for you -- and everyone around you -- to toss away those cigarettes. Click through the slideshow to find out:

  • You'll Be Less Anxious

Even though smokers may believe taking a long drag on a cigarette can help to calm nerves, a British study published earlier this year suggests that <em>quitting</em> can actually decrease anxiety more over the long-term. "People who achieve abstinence experience a <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2013/01/02/smoking-quit-anxiety.html">marked reduction in anxiety</a> whereas those who fail to quit experience a modest increase in the long term," researchers wrote in the British Journal of Psychiatry study, as reported by CBC News. Similarly, a 2010 study in the journal Addiction showed that <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/06/17/us-smoking-idUSTRE65G0CX20100617">perceived stress decreased</a> for people who quit smoking for a year after hospitalization for heart disease, Reuters reported.

  • Your Mouth Will Thank You

Quitting the habit could dramatically <a href="http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=661533">decrease your risk of dental problems</a> like cavities and gum disease, and even more dangerous conditions like oral cancer, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HealthDay reported that <a href="http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=661533">compared with former smokers</a>, smokers have a 1.5-times higher risk of developing at least three oral health conditions.

  • Your Sex Life Will Be Better

Here's a bedroom-related reason to quit smoking: studies have suggested a link between smoking and decreased sex drives for both men <em>and</em> women. Studies published in 2008 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that nicotine can affect even <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17971108">nonsmoking men's</a> and <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18331269">women's sexual arousal</a>. And if that's not enough to convince you, well, there's also <a href="http://healthland.time.com/2011/09/15/guys-quitting-smoking-makes-it-bigger-really/">this</a>.

  • You'll Save Your Skin

If you want your skin to be at its best, then you're better off quitting cigarettes. WebMD points out that smoking <a href="http://www.webmd.com/smoking-cessation/ss/slideshow-ways-smoking-affects-looks">affects skin tone</a>, promotes sagginess and, of course, causes those wrinkles around the lip area. However, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery notes that just a month-and-a-half after <a href="http://www.surgery.org/consumers/plastic-surgery-news-briefs/skin-quit-smoking-1031403">quitting smoking</a>, your skin will already begin to look better.

  • You'll Have More Locks

If you love your hair, maybe it's time to put the cigarettes down. Research has linked smoking with an increased risk of male pattern baldness. BBC News reported in 2007 on a Archives of Dermatology study, showing even after taking into account other hair-loss risk factors like age and race, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5413382.stm">heavy smoking</a> (at least 20 cigarettes daily) raised the risk of baldness. And a 2011 study showed that smoking, stress, drinking and genes were all<a href="http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/hair-loss/news/20110923/divorce-heavy-drinking-smoking-linked-to-hair-loss"> risk factors for baldness</a>, WebMD reported.

  • Your Mood Will Improve

Here's a pretty good benefit: Stopping smoking could <a href="http://news.brown.edu/pressreleases/2010/12/smoking">make you a happier person</a>, according to research from Brown University. Researchers there found that smokers were <a href="http://news.brown.edu/pressreleases/2010/12/smoking">never happier</a> than when they were quitting smoking, even if they went back to smoking afterward. According to a <a href="http://news.brown.edu/pressreleases/2010/12/smoking">news release</a>: <blockquote> The most illustrative ? and somewhat tragic ? subjects were the ones who only quit temporarily. Their moods were clearly brightest at the checkups when they were abstinent. After going back to smoking, their mood darkened, in some cases to higher levels of sadness than before.</blockquote>

  • You'll Have More Birthdays

Stopping smoking may <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/29/women-stop-smoking-live-10-years-longer_n_2011804.html">help women live a decade longer</a> than they would have if they had continued lighting up, according to a 2012 study in The Lancet. Researchers also found that the more the women smoked, the higher their risk of premature death, with even "light" smokers (those who smoked just one to nine cigarettes a day) having a doubled risk of death compared with non-smokers. "If women smoke like men, they die like men -- but, whether they are men or women, smokers who stop before reaching middle age will on average <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2012-10/l-soa102312.php">gain about an extra ten years of life</a>," study researcher Professor Sir Richard Peto, of the University of Oxford, said in a statement.

  • You'll Improve Your Pregnancy Chances

If you're trying to conceive, one of the best things you can do is to quit smoking, research shows. NBC News reported that women smokers have a 60 percent <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/16874634/ns/today-today_health/t/trying-conceive-quit-smoking/#.UOr-7onjlU4">higher chance of being infertile</a>, compared with nonsmokers. Smoking is also linked to more spontaneous miscarriages, according to NBC News.

  • You'll Enjoy Food More

If you <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Healthday/story?id=8427779#.UOsAFInjlU4">don't like bland food</a>, then don't smoke, research suggests. A small 2009 study of Greek soldiers shows an association between smoking and <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2009-08/bc-stf081809.php">"fewer and flatter" taste buds</a>, according to a statement on the research.

  • Your Colds Won't Be As Bad

Mild cold symptoms could take on a more serious form for smokers, according to a study from Yale University researchers. The findings, published in 2008 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, showed an <a href="http://news.yale.edu/2008/07/24/study-shows-why-cigarette-smoke-makes-flu-other-viral-infections-worse">overreaction of the immune systems</a> of cigarette smoke-exposed mice when exposed to a virus similar to the flu. "The anti-viral responses in the cigarette smoke exposed mice were not only not defective, but were hyperactive," study researcher Dr. Jack A. Elias, M.D., said in a statement. "These findings suggest that smokers do not get in trouble because they can't clear or<a href="http://news.yale.edu/2008/07/24/study-shows-why-cigarette-smoke-makes-flu-other-viral-infections-worse"> fight off the virus</a>; they get in trouble because they overreact to it."

Massacre-hardened Colorado a gun control test case

DENVER (AP) ? After the annual late-summer harvest on his farm in the eastern reaches of Colorado, Greg Brophy has a few friends over, breaks out the handguns and semi-automatic rifles and mows down some rotten watermelons.

The Republican state senator's melon shoot is a fixture on the political calendar in his rural district near the Nebraska border and a window into the culture of gun ownership in a state that cherishes its frontier heritage.

One of the worst and most high-profile school massacres in American history ? the 1999 Columbine shooting that killed 12 students and a teacher ? did little to alter that culture. In fact, it is now easier to carry a concealed handgun in the state than it was before Columbine.

Now, six months since a deadly movie theater rampage in suburban Denver, there's a new drive to restrict guns, fueled by the Connecticut school shooting. And Brophy and other gun rights backers worry the push may bear fruit because of state's demographic changes.

In recent decades, Democrats have done increasingly well as young coastal transplants flocked to Denver and its suburbs. The traditionally red state helped elect Barack Obama president in 2008 and chose him again in November, when the party won back the legislature.

Those suburban voters are "further removed from their rural roots," Brophy said. "I think they (Democrats) will overplay their hands and it will cost them, but over the past few election cycles, they've been right and I've been wrong."

Meanwhile, gun control activists worry that the momentum they believe they have after the Newtown, Conn., massacre will fade just as it did after the Columbine killings ? without enough of the kind of laws they believe have any chance to reduce gun violence.

On Thursday, Gov. John Hickenlooper in his state of the state speech called for universal background checks on all gun sales and a broader discussion about firearms regulations. Referencing the Aurora shooting and Columbine, Hickenlooper, a Democrat, said: "We have shown in Colorado that we can learn from tragedy and make changes."

The previous day, Democrats opened the latest legislative session as about 100 worried gun rights activists quietly marched outside to protest the still-unwritten gun control measures.

Republican lawmakers introduced a bill to allow school employees with concealed weapons permits to carry firearms at work, while a three-day hearing on the theater shooting wrapped up in a suburban courthouse with survivors talking about the need for more gun control.

As the state and the nation debates gun violence, the worries and hopes expressed on both sides are not that different today than they were after Columbine.

At the time, the government was controlled by the GOP, and the Republican legislature was putting its finishing touches on a bill to make it easier to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun. The bill was dropped after the attack.

The state's then-governor, a Republican, beefed up background checks of gun purchases. The Legislature barred "straw purchases" of guns by a legal buyer on behalf of minors. An 18-year-old had purchased the guns used by the Columbine killers at a gun show.

Voters overwhelmingly passed a ballot measure closing a loophole that allowed some gun show buyers to evade background checks.

That marked the end of Colorado's foray into gun restrictions.

By 2003, however, the Republican legislature began expanding gun access. It prevented towns and counties from passing certain types of gun restrictions and resurrected and finally passed its liberalization of concealed carry.

The gun control advocates were horrified. To them, it was a cautionary tale about the gun lobby's power. "Mostly what we've done on the gun issue is, we've been playing defense," said Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was killed at Columbine.

To their opponents, the state was a model of how not to over-react to the tragedies. "We want fewer guns in the hands of people who shouldn't have them and we want more guns in the hands of people who should," said Dave Kopel at the libertarian Independence Institute.

Kopel said he considered the expansion of concealed carry one of the state's greatest post-Columbine achievements. "It's the one that made all the difference in the world," he said, "because Jeanne Assam was lawfully carrying."

Assam, a former police officer, was working as a volunteer security guard at a Sunday evening service at a Colorado Springs mega-church in 2007 when a 24-year-old man began firing at churchgoers in the parking lot, killing two people and wounding three.

Assam shot him with her 9 mm Beretta. An autopsy found he shot himself.

By then, Democrats had won back control of the statehouse and governor's mansion. They did not pursue new gun control initiatives. A lot of Coloradans thought, "well, we've taken care of that," gun control activist Ted Pascoe said.

And then, early on July 20, state Rep. Rhonda Fields was called by a constituent who worked near the Century Aurora 16 movie theater. The caller said there was a new massacre in her district ? 12 people dead at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Returns."

Fields had joined the Legislature after her son, Javad Marshall-Fields, and his fiance were shot to death in 2005 to stop him from testifying at a murder trial.

Long a lonely voice for gun restrictions at the capitol, Fields was shocked that, even after the Aurora shooting, few joined her. Hickenlooper said he didn't know if restrictions on guns would have stopped the massacre.

"It does surprise me, and it saddens me as well," Fields said. "I'm sick and tired of this. I think enough is enough."

Four months later, Obama won Colorado by more than five points and Democrats recaptured the lower house of the Legislature. On Dec. 12, Hickenlooper said enough time had passed since Aurora that he'd now be open to discussing gun control measures.

Two days later, 24-year-old Adam Lanza went on his rampage, killing his mother and then killing 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

On Dec. 22, Fields and Aurora's state senator held an emotional news conference at the state capitol, flanked by tearful survivors of the theater shooting.

Theresa Hoover, whose 18-year-old son AJ Boik was among those killed, urged lawmakers to limit guns. She said it was a conversation Colorado "should've started years ago, and it's shame on us for letting it get this far."

If the state had done something earlier, Hoover said, sobbing, "You guys wouldn't even know who I was. And I would rather have it be that way."

The Teotihuacans exhumed their dead and dignified them with make-up

Jan. 9, 2013 ? In collaboration with the National University of Mexico, a team of Spanish researchers has analysed for the first time remains of cosmetics in the graves of prehispanic civilisations on the American continent. In the case of the Teotihuacans, these cosmetics were used as part of the after-death ritual to honour their city's most important people.

A research team from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the University of Valencia has studied various funerary samples found in urns in the Teotihuacan archaeological site (Mexico) that date from between 200 and 500 AD.

The scientists have been researching Mayan wall paintings in Mexico and Guatemala since 2006. Published in the 'Journal of Archaeological Science', this project came about after contact on various occasions with other researchers in the area, namely the National University of Mexico, who wanted to know the composition and function of the cosmetics found in pots.

"The conclusion that we have reached, given the structure of the pigments found, is that they are remains of cosmetics that were used in rituals following burial. At that time it was common to periodically practice a kind of remembrance worship of the deceased high nobility," as explained by Mar?a Teresa Domenech Carbo, director of the University Institute of Heritage Restoration of the Polytechnic University of Valencia and lead author of the study.

In these rituals the high priest of the city would conduct a ceremony in the dwelling of the most noble of citizens (nobility, princes and kings). The reason for this is that unlike today where graves are located in special places, in those days the deceased were buried underneath the floor of their homes.

"The priest would go to the home and would pay homage to the deceased with the family present. Cosmetics were used by the priest carrying out the ceremony and formed a part of the ritual. The remains of carbonaceous particles found lead to the belief that aromatic material were burnt, with the priest painting parts of the body with those pigments. In addition, it is probable that the body was removed and 'redecorated' too," explains Domenech.

Furthermore, the researchers outline that although we could think that these materials in the urns belonged to the deceased in life and were put in the grave to accompany their owner into the 'new life', as in the case of the Egyptians, the fact that the make-up did not contain any agglutinative substance (an organic vehicle that allows make-up to stick to the face or body) leads us to believe that they had more of a symbolic nature.

"It is not very frequent to find cosmetic products in archaeological excavations in America. These are the first on this continent to be analysed in a serious and systematic way," ensures the researcher. In Europe and Africa, mainly in countries such as Italy and Egypt, the analysis of cosmetic products is more common.

Teotihuacan is one of the most important and most visited archaeological sites in Mexico thanks to its close location to Mexico City and its spectacular great Mayan pyramid.

Flowing trade in Prehispanic Mexico

As well as providing more knowledge on the funerary rituals of this millennium-old culture, the cosmetic remains found help us to identify the social relevance of the buried individuals and they prove the existence of fluid commerce between the different areas of Mexico.

The scientists found material coming from the surroundings of Teotihuacan, such as pulverised volcanic rock pigments and other clay-like types typical of the area's geology.

Nonetheless, some remains, such as those mica and jarosite particles found, are not native to the surroundings and were probably imported from different parts of Mexico. This, in turn, confirms the existence of trade. "No surprise since this city dominated the entire Mesoamerican region and it has been shown that fluid trade existed in certain southern areas," points out the researcher.

In addition, the appearance of these remains with the body of the deceased indicates their social status. "Unless the person was very important to this civilisation they were not buried with cosmetic products. The deceased would have had to hold an important position in society, such as that of a king, a prince or a high noble," ensures the expert.

Following this study, the research team analysed another collection of cosmetic material in the region of Guatemala. The results are currently awaiting publication.
