Great Guide On How To Make The Most Out Of Your Landscape

Landscaping may seem tough, but it doesn?t have to be. If you educate yourself on the subject, it will be much easier. Read on for simple tips to get you started.

Make use of native plants and shrubs when planning your landscaping project. When you are deciding what to plant, it is a good idea to choose shrubs, flowers and trees that do well in your area. Native plants are most likely to thrive in your area because they have adapted to the local rainfall amounts and temperatures.

Using a variety of multi-level plants and elements add dimension and depth to your landscaping. Hard landscaping features like terraces, walks, pools and fountains add to the landscape?s dimensional interest. You don?t have to have heavy equipment to add appealing dimension to your landscaping project. A shovel and a little elbow grease is all it takes to create a gentle slope or small terrace.

Look at resources past stores and catalogs. Check out any local botanical garden or arboretum where you can find a variety of native plants and materials for sale. Many times the plants that are offered in a botanical garden are not offered at any other location. As well, neighbors might have plants they need to remove, like extra perennials they can?t use.

You get what you pay for. Quality landscaping items are usually better than cheap, inferior quality items. If you always gravitate toward the bargain bin or 50 percent off plants, you might be setting yourself up for a lot of work and trouble. Check out a specialty store in order to obtain unique products as well as useful advice from different experienced workers. You may pay a little more, but it?s worth it simply because you get quality products and advice.

A softly curving border can give just the right bit of focus and punch that your landscape needs. Curved beds are the newer style and much more up-to-date than a sharp corner or straight line. Cutting fresh edges could be an inexpensive task that could have a great impact on the way your flower bed and lawn looks.

Make a landscape that looks great all year around. It is a good idea to choose plants that have different blooming times, along with evergreens, so that there is always something blooming or green in your yard, even in winter months. A landscape you can enjoy year-round will please you every day.

Don?t subscribe to the idea that cheaper is always better. When it comes to landscaping, you often get what you pay for, making the cheapest options the worst ones. If you need help or advice, you may want to spend a little extra and choose a specialty shop where you can ask questions and get guarantees.

Is selling your home being considered? Landscaping your yard is a great way to increase the value of your house. Use the front yard to give your home curb appeal and the back yard for an outdoor entertaining area.

If the scope of your landscaping project is large enough, an hour or two with a professional landscaper or architect may be worth it, as they can give you expert guidance on choosing your plants and help you refine your design. Seasoned experts have the ability to offer useful, cost-effective ideas for your outdoor space. The average price of a consultation is around $75 and this will pay for itself after a while.

If you are looking at creating a nice landscape around your home, but are short on money, think about using neighborhood cost sharing. This lets your neighbors chip money in and allows everyone to share tools used for landscaping maintenance. You are then able to schedule at what times everyone can use the items.

It?s important to carefully consider your plant?s needs, as they can have a big impact on the success of your landscaping project. Don?t plant things in shady areas if they require much sunlight. Trees, while small when initially planted, require considerable room when they mature. Take time to be certain your plants will grow well where they are planted.

Choose a quality brand fertilizer that is appropriate for your garden. Try to stick with one universal fertilizer for your entire garden. Try out various products and read over reviews on them to figure out what fertilizers work the best. You should use fertilizer before starting your project.

As this article stated, landscaping is not always easy. Anyone can landscape if they are armed with the right knowledge and tools. The main ingredient to a successful landscape is understanding the correct way to do it. Use the tips in the article to help improve your landscaping.

Boo! Ghost Exchange?

October, 2012

(Insert Deep Voice) In a world?.

Ghost Exchange, a documentary by Camilla Sullivan and Rob Lyall, is about to bring stock market structural issues front and center to Main Street. You can watch the trailer to the movie here.

Reuters? Emily Flitter caught up with Camilla yesterday, who told her that the Flash Crash caught her attention in 2010, prompting her to commence this project, in which she asks, ??Are we taking care of and nurturing our capital markets or do we have the potential to lose something very important?? You can read the Reuters article here.

Ghost Exchange is a series of interviews with varied market participants ? from Direct Edge?s William O?Brien to the Themis boys. Their views of the quality of our current market structure varies, and we do believe you understand all the issues portrayed ? being our clients and friends. However what the film does, and will do, is further bring sunlight to a complex and murky debate.

We all sometimes feel that bringing our issues to the for-profit stock exchanges has not resulted in material change and reform. The same can be said for bringing these issues to the attention of industry groups. We also all sometimes feel that the regulators know of these issues, and yet continue to place their rubber stamp of approval on Frankenstein. It has become clear to many of us that meaningful reform, will best be born from widespread public education, debate, media exposure, as well as pressure on Congress. And Congress will only act if the benefit to them of listening to concerned constituents outweighs the benefits to them from corporate and industry-group lobbying. We have no doubt that eventually this will take place; the winds of change are in motion. The only question is will it happen before a financial disaster strikes again.

Reaching Out To Prospects by way of Email Advertising | EzinePR

Did you realize that the most regularly engaged in act on the internet is email. There is no other action or special interest or pursuit that exists on the internet that people are connected to, and that includes Facebook and Twitter. If you certainly want to get someone?s notice, rather than calling them up on the telephone, then just consign them an email. You see, people who use this facility investigate their inbox many times a day. Therefore email is one of the most reliable ways to contact somebody in this day and age. Even those people who are ?less connected? tend to possess an email address.

What this means in a business sense is that if you you can dispatch an email to present and budding customers, then you will be delivering to them in the most reliable way possible. As cited before most people investigate their emails at least daily. Those that don?t investigate this often doubtlessly check their inbox at least weekly, and this means that eventually they will see your message. Even if they don?t peruse it right away their memory will be jogged regarding your business and its services. And of course there is provision for them to keep safe your email for later in a reserved folder of their choosing.

And the cool thing is that email marketing is cheap, and of course it can be completely free. Does this sound too good to be true?

The downside when we chat about email is unwanted messages in your inbox. This is commonly inferred as spam or junk mail. I realize I am not alone in saying that I abhor spam with a passion as it is a real time waster. To frustrate spam most email accounts these days come with spam filters, so if you aspire to consign a message to a likely purchaser ?uninvited?, your email will get averted to the recipient?s junk folder which almost all people don?t even look at.

So the moral here is don?t attempt to send unwelcome emails. But, how do you then deliver your communication to budding and current clients without triggering the spam filter?

Almost all companies and businesses who want to take advantage of email marketing do so by raising an ?opt-in? email list. This can be done in a number of ways by which the potential customer undertakes to sign up to your list after realizing a purchase, or by taking advantage of a free offer they may have observed on your website. You may have seen an example like ?enter your name and email details below to receive your free copy of?? By doing so the purchaser is inserted to your list and therefore grants you the required permission to actively send emails promoting your product or service.

Once you gain a new client who has opted in to your list, it is very crucial that you offer value to that customer. In doing so he or she will want to remain on your list. Be sure to not drop too many emails; two per week would probably be the maximum number you should look at. When creating your emails, make sure you have something relevant to say. Give away something for gratis to maintain the customer on side and that way he or she will warm to you. When you do this your list subscribers will often promulgate your business around by word of mouth and this is just about assured if they are pleased with you.

Akin remarks remain in spotlight in Mo. Senate bid

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Since first uttering the regrettable comments about "legitimate rape," Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin has been his own most formidable foe ? distracting attention from his big-government campaign theme against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill by continuing to say quirky or questionable things.

Now, with less than two weeks remaining until Election Day, Akin is running out of time to focus the attention of voters squarely on McCaskill and to recoup the financial support necessary to counter her advertising blitz.

"The Republicans hoped this would be a referendum on McCaskill and the Obama administration," said Beth Miller, a political scientist at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. "Instead it has become really a referendum on Todd Akin and whether he's really fit to be a U.S. senator."

The naysayers include leaders of Akin's own party and outside groups that control millions of dollars in campaign cash that they now are directing to Republicans in other races. An Associated Press analysis of Akin's campaign finance report shows that the temporary swell of small-dollar donations he received after his remark was not accompanied by many contributions of the maximum amount allowed by law.

The rush of Republican financial support predicted by Akin supporters such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has yet to materialize. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney ? he urged Akin to drop out after the rape remark ? continues to shun him. And the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which pulled millions of dollars of planned advertising in Missouri, has remained on the sidelines. The few GOP senators who did lend their names as hosts to an Akin fundraiser in Washington didn't actually show up for it.

The problems started after Akin was asked in a TV interview in late August about the odds of a woman becoming pregnant from rape. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," he said.

The furor over the remark suggests that the seat Republicans were once favored to win is no sure thing in the party's quest to gain control of the Senate. From the moment Akin's now-famous comment aired on Aug. 19, the GOP started looking elsewhere for the four seats it would have to net if President Barack Obama wins re-election, or three if Romney prevails.

Akin acknowledged that his campaign hasn't gone quite as he anticipated.

"This thing has been a bucking bronco ride," Akin said in a recent interview with the AP, adding that he has no regrets about forging ahead. "It's always worth it when you do what you think in your heart is the right thing to do."

Akin is not denying the financial challenge that stands between him and McCaskill's Senate seat.

Noting that McCaskill has outspent him 10-to-1 on advertising in some weeks, Akin's campaign recently pleaded with donors to dig a little deeper, telling them in an email message, "We need resources NOW in order to compete with McCaskill."

The money plea came as media coverage was again focused on something Akin said ? this time, comparing McCaskill to a "dog" that fetches "taxes and red tape and bureaucracy" from Washington, D.C. Last month, Akin drew linguistic scrutiny after suggesting McCaskill wasn't very "ladylike" in their first debate. Unlike the "legitimate rape" comment, Akin made no apologies for the "ladylike" or "dog" remarks.

Akin's comments have played right into McCaskill's campaign strategy. The day after Akin won a competitive Aug. 7 Republican primary, McCaskill launched a website featuring video clips of Akin criticizing Social Security, the minimum wage and federal student loans. When Akin's "legitimate rape" remark aired on TV on Aug. 19, it only added to McCaskill's theme that Akin was extreme and out of touch with the mainstream.

More recently, McCaskill has hammered Akin with TV ads featuring rape survivors expressing outrage about his remark and his opposition to emergency contraception. At a campaign rally earlier this week, McCaskill quipped that her strategy before the election is to "just keep Todd Akin talking."

Akin asserts it is McCaskill who is out of touch with the views of many Missourians, illustrated by her support for Obama and his big-government policies, such as the 2009 stimulus act and 2010 health care law. McCaskill's ties to Obama ? she was one of his earliest supporters in the 2008 presidential campaign ? figured to provide an advantage to Akin in a state that has recently tilted toward Republicans in national elections. Obama, who narrowly lost Missouri despite a vigorous campaign in 2008, essentially conceded the state this year to Romney.

Akin's latest strategy has been to portray McCaskill as the beneficiary of big government by highlighting the business deals of her husband, Joseph Shepard. Firms affiliated with Shepard received $39 million in federal housing subsidies during McCaskill's first five years in office, though McCaskill's campaign has said that money helped operate low-income housing units and did not personally enrich the family.

Akin had hoped that the National Republican Senatorial Committee would re-enter Missouri's Senate race if he remained close in the polls in the final weeks. An NRSC spokesman said it is a keeping "a close eye on this race" and hopes Akin can win.

But two Republicans with knowledge of the situation said the committee has looked at the race several times in the aftermath of Akin's remarks and decided he is too far adrift of McCaskill for them to get involved with the contest. The committee has instead poured money into other states. The Republicans spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the committee's decision-making.

The Karl Rove-backed group Crossroads GPS has, likewise, stood firm in its decision to stop advertising in Missouri after Akin's rape remark.

But Akin has received financial help from political committees associated with several Republican senators, including Jim DeMint of South Carolina, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, James Inhofe of Oklahoma and Jon Kyl of Arizona.

Some individuals also have stepped up their giving to Akin. For example, finance reports show that suburban St. Louis residents Donald and Linda Runge gave $200 to Akin before his "legitimate rape" remark. Since then, they've given him at least three additional donations totaling $150 and may chip in more, said Linda Runge.

"When all the Republicans wanted to turn their backs on him, we said no," Linda Runge said. "We understand it was a slip of the tongue. We wanted to make sure we supported him, and that's why we decided to give even more to him."

Indian Corn Fall Wreath Tutorial | Positively Splendid {Crafts ...

After finishing up my outdoor fall decor last week, I knew I wanted to craft a new wreath for the space, as well.?There is something about a new wreath that makes me feel like I?m adding a smile to my front door!

Indian corn is such a vibrant, natural display of fall color at its finest, and I opted to use some mini Indian corn and a simple grapevine wreath for this project. Although this wreath only requires a few simple supplies, the end result is anything but ordinary! Let me show you how I put this together.

For this project, you will need?

  • Indian corn (I used 2 packages of 3 ears of mini Indian corn, and two large ears of Indian corn)
  • Grapevine wreath
  • Ribbon
  • Fabric scrap
  • Hot glue
  • Foam board
  • Decorative paper (I used wrapping paper)
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush

To begin, soften the husks of your corn by submerging them in warm water. A few seconds is all it takes to make them nice and pliable. Lay each ear of corn onto a piece of wax paper or freezer paper to dry slightly.

When the husks are dry enough to handle easily but still pliable, fold each husk piece down toward the ear of corn to form a pretty loop. The husks will bend easily, and you will likely find they will hold their shape on their own, but if you encounter any stubborn pieces, use hot glue to secure the loop into place.

Use hot glue to affix the ears of corn to your wreath, layering them in a way that showcases the pretty loops husk loops and the colorful kernels on each ear.

Cut a 3-inch strip of fabric, and wrap it around your wreath for another layer of color, securing it as you work with hot glue. (My fabric is from Joel Dewberry.)

Accent the wreath with a pretty ribbon bow, if desired.

I finished my wreath with a monogram made using foam board, which I covered with some fun faux bois wrapping paper from the dollar section at Target and Mod Podge. My friend Diane has a terrific tutorial for creating these monograms on her blog.

I love how the husks of the ears of corn mimic the look of flowers, and the rich fall colors make my heart happy!

Thanks so much for making me a part of your day!

Why Does My Business Need a Blog ? | Eco SEO

Do you currently have a small business website which you update occasionally or make minor changes to a couple of pages, but essentially remains the same from one year to the next? If so you need a blog.

What is a Blog?

Firstly let?s define exactly what a blog is and isn?t. There?s a common misconception that blogging is just for kids who want to complain about their school dinners, disgruntled employees to have a whinge about their boss or wordpress bloggingfor big companies who have big news stories, ?but not me, I don?t have anything to write about?. Wrong!

Of course all the above examples do exist, but that?s just the tip of the iceburg. All a blog really is, is an easy way for people and companies to write something and publish it to the web, that?s it, how you use it is what defines your blog. It also offers an easy way to update any social profiles with your latest news, product launches, testimonials, new hires, the list goes on (but I?ll come to that later).

Three of the most common ones are WordPress, Blogger and Typepad, most hosting services offer an easy way to install at least one of these, although you will need some additional security and features once it?s installed, so if you don?t know how to do this, ask your web designer or seo company to do it for you.

The SEO Benefits

Also, on it?s most basic level, it?s a DIY SEO tool. Imagine someone does a search for something very specific, let?s say ?black dog collar with red dots?, if you are the only site which uses this exact term on your site, guess who is likely to appear in top position? (I?ll give you a clue, it?s not the site which sells pink collars with orange dots!).

As soon as you publish a new post, your website pings the search engines too, I won?t bore you with the technical description but basically it tells them you have added a new post, so they know to come and index the new page. If you update fairly regularly, they get to know this, so for example, when I add a new post it?s usually indexed by Google in about 10-15 minutes!

From a user perspective, they can also see that your website is up to date. Even if you only post once a month this is better than your next competitor who doesn?t have a blog at all. And once they are there, they can click on one of the links you included which leads through to your sales pages on the main website.

Oh, and Google likes blogs, well, to be more specific they like regularly updated sites, blogging just happens to be a really easy way to do it.

But I Don?t Have Anything to Write About !

Whenever I have the blog conversation with a client, or prospective client, I seem to come up against this, so here are a few ideas to help you get started. Once you get started, you?ll have more ideas related to your specific industry. I often think ?I can?t elaborate on that point too much or the post will be too long?, if that?s the case, jot the idea down and there is the next idea for a post, then you can link to it from the previous post as a point of reference too.

Just remember that a blog shouldn?t be a series of sales pitches, it?s information to attract and engage prospective clients which also offers them the opportunity to follow links to your main website (the pages which are selling).

Lists- Like this one??.

Testimonials ? The various blogging software offers a way to put all your testimonials into their own category, which groups them all together in one place.

Success Stories ? If you have achieved something which makes you stand out from the crow, shout about it.

Discuss and Comment on Someone Else?s Posts ? If a popular blog in your industry is discussing to do listsomething and it?s getting a lot of attention, write your own perspective on the story and link to them.

News Stories ? If something is happening which will have an impact on your industry, writ about it and explain why.

Answer Common Questions ? If you are customer facing in your job, you will know the questions which come up time and time again (if not ask someone who is), then answer these questions in a post, you can bet if you are asked them in person, even more people are asking the questions online.

Industry Trends ? How are things looking overall in your industry? The global recession has had an impact on a lot of businesses, you can appear as an industry guru if you write about the bigger picture (although never claim to be one).

Looking Forward ? Are you planning to expand, move offices, take on a new product line in the coming year? If so and it doesn?t need to be kept quiet from the competition, write about it.

Book Reviews ? Read a good book recently? Why not review it?

Make a Video ? If you have products which you demonstrate in any way at all, why not make an informative video and post it up on your blog? Guided tours of your factory or packaging plant can also work well.

Conferences and Seminars ? If you have seen a public speaker from within your industry you can write about them, it doesn?t matter if you think they have great ideas or spoke a load of old tosh, it?s your opinion on the topic which matters here.

Staff Profiles ? Write about your staff, what experiences they have, success stories in their career, charity events they support and add a picture too, a nice one though, not that one from last years office party!

Support A Charity? ? OK, so tell everyone about it.

Series Posts ? If you want to write about something particularly technical, break it down into several posts and make sure you link to the previous and next ones.

Predictions ? Know something that other people don?t? Something which is going to have an effect on your industry or the people within it? So tell them! Remember when it happens, you can write about it again, linking back to your original post to gain further credibility.

Dispel Common Misconceptions ? There are usually myths around most industries and the way they work (believe me I know, SEO is rife with them) explain why they are not true and what the situation really is.

Milestones ? Had some major successes in the past? Old news can be just as relevant and helps readers understand how your business got to where it is today.

What?s the Competition up to ? ? Reading your competitors blogs can give you an insight to their company and ideas for new posts. Just remember they could be reading yours too.

How To?s ? You would be amazed at how many web searches start off with ?how to?, so write some articles which explain how to do something.

Tips ? Do most people only use a fraction of the features available with your software or product, or not know about additional benefits of your service? Write about them.

Events- If you are holding a seminar or speaking at someone elses, this provides an opportunity to both announce it in advance and to review it afterwards, 2 posts for the price of one!

This should have given you a few ideas, if not perhaps you?re just not cut out to be the company blogger and bloggingshould consider passing the baton over to somebody else within the company, remember the more you write, the better your chances of attracting that next big customer. So bookmark this page and every time you can?t think of a suitable topic, come back and it should give you some inspiration.

Share and Enjoy

Spur Your Child's Creativity | BeSafeChild Magazine

Spur Your Child?s Creativity

Many parents may be surprised to learn that, according to Harris research, children begin taking an interest in changing their rooms just after the age of 5, citing more space to hang out and play as the No. 1 wish for the space. The study also found that 71 percent of parents think the design of a child?s room impacts creativity.

?We?ve seen how room design can unleash a child?s creativity in our own family,? said Cortney Novogratz from HGTV?s ?Home by Novogratz.? ?For example, it?s important to give children their own workspace and play space filled with materials designed to help express their ideas in a productive and inspirational way, like arts and crafts supplies and construction toys such as LEGO Friends. It?s also important to give children plenty of floor space in which to play and get creative; this gives them their own personal space in which to spread out and use their imaginations to the fullest.?

In addition to inviting children to put their remodeling and rebuilding skills to the test using toys that encourage construction, Robert and Cortney Novogratz offer these suggestions:

ONE: Give kids more space. Leave as much floor space open for playing and hanging out as possible. Center the room with a soft rug and include easy storage solutions. The most effective storage is easily accessible to kids, where they can pull it out, play with their toys and be able to put it back without any help. The best storage solutions do not dominate the room but cleverly do the job without taking up too much space.

TWO: Show children their ideas have value by including them in the design decision-making process as much as possible, letting them offer their ideas. Bear in mind that boys and girls are equally interested in having a say in the design of their rooms. If you make your children a part of the creation process, they may be more likely to take better care of their environment and their belongings.

THREE: Personalize with color and collections. Embrace bold colors and don?t forget to have fun with it. Add more personality and originality, and foster a child?s pride by displaying his or her collections. Fun solutions for displaying collections include corkboards or pin boards to display art; Lucite shelves and boxes to display collections; and simple cubed shelving units that are cost effective and great for displaying models, trophies and other things that kids gravitate toward.

(AP) ? One day out from their last debate, Republican Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama are cramming foreign policy and taking a rare break from swing-state campaigning.

Monday's face-off in Boca Raton, Fla., represents one of the last major opportunities for Obama and Romney to capture the attention of millions of voters ? especially that small but sought-after group of voters who haven't yet made up their minds.

Obama was holed up in Camp David in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he arrived Friday to prep for the debate, a 90-minute encounter focused on international affairs. With him at the presidential retreat were a band of top advisers including National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, campaign strategist David Axelrod and White House senior adviser David Plouffe.

Romney planned to spend the weekend in Florida, continuing intensive preparation that has consumed large amounts of his time in recent weeks.

Foreign policy has surfaced as a prominent issue in the waning weeks of the race, elevated by a deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and a restive situation in Syria. Although polls show voters continue to prioritize economic issues, both candidates are aggressively pitching themselves as more competent to be commander in chief.

In an unusually quiet day on the campaign trail, Romney running mate Paul Ryan was the only candidate to be out in front of voters. The Wisconsin congressman plans two events Sunday in Iowa, including one in Sioux City with country singer Mark Wills, plus an evening rally in Colorado.

Still, with a tight race closing in, neither Romney nor Obama can afford more than a few days away from the handful of states that will decide the winner.

Obama planned a whirlwind excursion starting after Monday's debate. Events Tuesday in Florida and Ohio will be followed by around-the-clock campaigning Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa; Denver; Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Then on to Tampa, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; and Cleveland on Thursday, when Obama will also return home to Chicago to vote early as part of the campaign's push for early and absentee voting.

In a sign that the candidates' time has become the most precious commodity, Obama's aides said he planned to sleep Wednesday night aboard Air Force One and would call undecided voters from the airplane between stops.

Israel swaps missile drills for earthquake rehearsal

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel dropped its annual simulation of a missile attack and held its first major earthquake drill on Sunday instead, but officials insisted the country remained as ready as ever for the possibility of a war with arch-foe Iran.

School children, civil servants and others participating in the "Turning Point 6" exercise were urged to flee outdoors if possible as radio and TV channels broadcast tremor alerts. In previous years, people were told to go to household bomb shelters in order to flee an imaginary missile attack.

"We want people to run into homes during a missile attack, and we want people to run out of homes during an earthquake," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said after he and fellow ministers evacuated their weekly cabinet meeting.

The change in format comes at a time when hostile rhetoric over Tehran's disputed nuclear program has waned, with both Israel and the United States about to hold elections and Western powers pursuing ever-stronger sanctions against Iran.

But Israeli officials denied the drill signaled an easing of their stance on Iran.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak said the exercise readied Israel for more than "something that happens once in 5,000 years", but for what he called "the very real scenarios" of missile strikes.

Other officials emphasized the risk of an earthquake given the abutting Syria-Africa rift along Israel's eastern frontier.

"We understand that earthquakes will certainly happen. The question is when," Mickey Tessler, a brigadier-general in Israel's military Homefront Command, told Army Radio.

"It is very important to emphasize that whoever is ready for earthquakes perforce increases his readiness level for various events, including wartime events," he said.

Tessler said people should respond "in seconds" due to Israel's lack of seismic early warning systems but another official said work on technologies that could eventually detect tremors up to half a minute in advance was underway.

"NO LINK TO MILITARY MANOEUVRES"

Turning Point 6 was to feature simulations of 5.4- and 7.1- scale tremors as well as a tsunami drenching the coast, where most of Israel's population and industry is centered.

Israelis on the lower floors of buildings were instructed to find safe ground outside, and those on higher storeys to shelter in fortified rooms, with doors kept open, or under sturdy furniture.

Officials said that Israel had once adhered to a policy followed in other earthquake-prone countries for people to take cover indoors rather than venture outside.

"However, upon review, we found because buildings in Israel tend to be made of heavier materials such as bricks, it would be better to advise those who can to go outdoors," Alon Rozen, an ex-director general of the civil defence ministry, said.

The drill coincided with Israeli-hosted joint missile-defence maneuvers with U.S. forces. That three-week drill, "Austere Challenge 2012", is unrelated to Turning Point 6, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

Israel has hinted it could resort to military force to deny Iran the means to make nuclear arms - which Tehran denies seeking - and has made similar threats to attack Syria's chemical arsenal. Either action could draw retaliatory missiles against the Jewish state from Iran, Syria and Islamist militants in Lebanon and Gaza.

Race tightens for Obama, Romney ahead of final debate

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The race between President Barack Obama and rival Mitt Romney has tightened in the days before their final televised debate, with the Republican closing the gap on Obama's slight but steady lead in a Reuters/Ipsos online poll.

Data from the daily tracking poll released on Saturday showed the Democratic incumbent with a small lead over the former Massachusetts governor, but the margin has narrowed from Friday and from results earlier in the week.

Forty-six percent of likely voters said they would vote for Obama in the November 6 election, while 45 percent said they would back Romney.

On Friday, Obama was ahead by three percentage points at 46 percent compared to 43 percent for Romney.

"Our numbers have shown ... Obama fairly steadily ahead by three points over the last couple of days and today's data does show a tightening in those numbers," Ipsos pollster Julia Clark said.

"It's very much neck and neck. I anticipate actually that we're going to see these numbers neck and neck all the way to Election Day."

Romney got a big boost from his strong performance in the first debate on October 3 with Obama, who was widely judged to have given a passive, lackluster performance.

The president charged back with a sharper appearance in their second debate on October 16, comforting frustrated Democrats. While opinion polls showed most viewers thought Obama won that debate, Clark said he did not, in the end, get a noticeable bounce in the polls as a result.

"I wouldn't say that we saw a second-debate bounce for either candidate," she said, while predicting that the third and final debate on Monday would not affect the race dramatically unless one of the candidates made a significant gaffe.

The final debate focuses on foreign policy. Obama is spending the weekend at the presidential retreat at Camp David in Maryland to prepare, and Romney is doing the same in Florida, a battleground state where the debate will be held.

Though national polls give a sense of the mood of the electorate, the winner of the White House race will be determined by electoral votes from a handful of states such as Ohio and Florida that swing, historically, between voting for Republicans and Democrats in presidential elections.

A RealClearPolitics average of polls on Saturday showed Obama ahead in Ohio by 2.5 percentage points and Romney ahead in Florida by 2.1 percentage points.

The precision of Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.0 percentage points for likely voters.

Home resales slip, housing recovery still eyed

By Jason LangePosted 2012/10/19 at 6:00 pm EDT

WASHINGTON, Oct. 19, 2012 (Reuters) ? Home resales retreated in September from a two-year high, a reminder that America's housing sector is a long way from a full recovery despite recent signs of improvement.

A "for sale" sign is seen outside a home in New York June 19, 2012. REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton

Existing home sales fell 1.7 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.75 million units, matching the median forecast in a Reuters poll, data from the National Association of Realtors showed on Friday.

Housing has been a relative bright spot in the U.S. economy this year, and Friday's data did not point to a reversal in that trend. The reading for August was revised slightly higher to show resales at a 4.83 million-unit annual rate.

"While these numbers bounce around, there is no doubt that this is showing the housing market is improving," said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania.

The median price for a home resale rose 11.3 percent from a year earlier to $183,900. The rise in prices appears due to both tight inventories and a downward trend in sales made under distressed conditions like foreclosures.

To support the economy, the U.S. Federal Reserve launched a program last month to buy housing-related debt, an action that has driven mortgage rates to record lows. Fed policymakers meet next week, but are unlikely to take fresh steps.

The economy has shown signs of faster growth recently, with the jobless rate falling and retail sales picking up. Threats to that momentum remain, however. The U.S. government is on track to tighten fiscal policy in January, while Europe's debt crisis also looms heavily.

Investors in stocks largely ignored the data, focusing instead on disappointing corporate earnings results that pushed major indexes lower. Four top U.S. manufacturers, including General Electric Co and Honeywell International Corp, reported weaker-than-expected sales.

PRICE SUPPORT

Tight inventories have helped support home prices in recent months, which could help economic growth by making consumers more comfortable about their finances.

The nation's stock of existing homes for sale fell 3.3 percent last month to 2.32 million units. At the current pace of sales, inventories would be exhausted in 5.9 months, the lowest rate since March 2006, the NAR said.

Lawrence Yun, an economist at the NAR, said the drop in inventories was in part due to a weak pace of new home construction, which has pushed more people into the resales market. While groundbreaking at construction sites is rising, it remains about 60 percent below its 2006 peak.

At the same time, overall demand appears to be firming. The median time previously owned homes spent on market was 70 days in September, down 30.7 percent from a year ago.

Also helping prices, the share of distressed sales fell to 24 percent in September from 30 percent in the same month of 2011.

This week, Goldman Sachs estimated growth in the housing sector will likely add about a quarter percentage point to economic growth this year and could add a half point in 2013.

Much of the economic boost comes from the building of new homes, although existing home sales also help growth as people go out to buy furniture and realtors reap more in commissions.

In a bid to encourage more home purchases, the Fed said last month it would buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities every month until the jobs outlook improves substantially.

This program, known on Wall Street as "QE3," will add renewed support for housing in the coming months and could build on the progress already seen in the market.

"QE3 came against a good, healthy backdrop which means its potential impact might be stronger," said Pierre Ellis, an economist at Decision Economics in New York.
